is a revolver a good choice for a first time gun owner?

If you're not used to guns, and have a tendency to limp wrist with an auto, then a revolver is the way to go until you can gain more skill/technique. Then you can move to an M&P

I agree with Jesse and Matt both. Will this be just for target practice or also used for self protection? A 22lr is great to learn the fundamentals and marksmanship before expanding your horizons but no so much for self defense. If you really want a revolver I would get a 357 so you also have the option of shooting cheaper and less aggressive 38specials with the same gun. But otherwise a glock 17 is a great reliable handgun to learn with and was my first handgun.

I don't think there's a wrong choice between a good revolver and a good auto. I kinda feel like shooting an auto from the start would give someone the best foundation for pistol shooting.

Everyone knows the real correct answer is: Glock 19

My first pistol was a stainless Virginian Dragoon in .44 mag. Second a Ruger Mark I, 5" bull barrel semi auto in .22.

If we knew what the intended purpose of your first pistol was going to be, we might be able to offer some more suggestions.

Yes, the purpose is pretty key.

It's pretty darn hard to go wrong with a .357 magnum revolver for a single handgun that has to pull duty for defense, hunting, and general range fun if you are on a limited budget or can only own one gun. If that's not the case and defense is the primary purpose a M&P 9 would be a much better choice. Lots of things to consider.

It is going to boil down to how much the person knows about guns, and how they function. My 1st gun was a 1911, but I had been around guns and knew what to do if I had a malfunction. And I had a former Marine Drill Instructor grandfather who could teach me to use it properly. For someone with zero experience with guns, revolvers are an obvious choice. Which one, and what caliber will depend on intended use. If it for carry, you want a smaller one, if it's strictly for home defense, get a full size.

This is why most of us here have more than one gun. My nightstand gun is a full size Glock with a light/laser attached. And I have 3 carry guns. Which one I use will depend on how I have to dress that day, and which one I can easily and comfortably conceal.

Some explanation because OP is new: the Glock 19 is generally regarded as the gold standard "do-it-all handgun." If you wanted one gun for concealed carry, home defense, and target practice you could do a lot worse. I think the biggest benefit of a 9mm auto pistol in general is that 9mm is the cheapest centerfire round you can buy so you can shoot more.

E: of course, the Glock 19 is really popular so they never last long on the used market. Summit is running a sale on Glock 22s for $313 right now; you'd never see a 19 that low.

Yeah, the prices on police trade in G22's is hard to beat. Just as dependable as any other Glock and the money you save could give you a good start on ammo.

When did PGiggly grow up and start giving such sound advice with no sarcasm or internet based humor attached?

I saw an email today, maybe Natchez, that had some bulk fmj ammo on sale. .40 ammo was $.02 cents a round higher than the 9mm in the same brand and line. Now if they would just get .45 down to $.02 higher than .40

No. Buy an autoloader. Revolvers are cool, but they are obsolete. Name a police force that doesn't employ Barney Fife that issues revolvers. Name a military that issues revolvers. Name a paramilitary that issues revolvers. Organizations that cater to lowest common denominator window lickers issue autoloaders. The only orgs that issue revolvers are nobodies, casino trash, and rent-a-cops. Even armored truck personnel moved away from revolvers, and they are the lowest.

Autoloaders are the present and future. Revolvers can't even bring 200 people to a world championship, nor 100 people to a national championship.

Like, I remember being new to handguns and all I knew about them I got from my grandpa so this was the sum total of my handgun knowledge:

1. No auto pistol other than a .45ACP 1911 is worth owning. 9mm will bounce off of bad guys forever. Somehow, carrying a .380 PPK is OK though.
2. It's important to put the index finger of your non-dominant hand on the trigger guard to control recoil.
3. Weaver stance weaver stance weaver stance
4. Kimber? Yes please!

And of course I believed all this stuff because everybody believes their male role models re: cars and guns and sports teams. Finding information on the Internet would have helped earlier than it did, except finding information that confirmed what I already believed was really easy because there are a ton of crackpot Fudds who have figured out how to use computers, and people are much more likely to believe information that reinforces their current beliefs because cognitive biases.

Sooooooooooo I try not to troll newbies because I remember being a Dumb Newbie. Unless they pull a Zander. Then I might get the gifs.
