I got scolded the other day

In my mind a dirty weapon, unless you just got done using it, or are in a rough environment, is a sign of something.

1.You have gotten too comfortable with it that you no longer give it the respect it deserves. I think we have all gotten to this point, even if only for a few minutes. Getting too comfortable means you get sloppy. Sure I now slide my gun into my waistband just as easily as I slide my wallet into my back pocket, but I always check my chamber and remind myself why I am carrying. I am not saying the OP did this, but it is easy to treat your weapon like just another accessory, rather than the tool that it is. Like carrying is a fashion statement rather than a responsibility in an increasingly troubled world.

2. You are lazy. Again, not calling the OP out but I visually inspect my weapon when I take it off. If it's dirty, or sweaty I take care of it before I do anything else. Now, when I was carrying a Glock I got lax on this. Now that I carry a 1911 it is habit, but should be I think for everyone. Carlos Hathcock, after spending 4-5 days in the field stalking a general with little to eat or drink cleaned his weapon before cleaning himself and crawling into his rack. Now, do we need to be that stringent? not necessarily but the principal is, take care of your gear first, and it will take care of you.

Now, again I am not saying the OP was either of these things, but maybe this is a good chance for all of us to review our outlook on things. Should the officer have jumped you for having a dirty gun? I guess I would have to see the gun to give an opinion there. Should we all be more diligent than we are about our weapons? Probably.

Was that on topic?

Kevin you bring up a very valid point. It prob is just being lazy. A lot has to do with living in 2 towns right now and storing most of my gun stuff in a 3rd. But I should take more time for maintenance. Lately it has been a lot of quick wipe down and re grease.

I will let you guys be the judge of if it is to dirty to carry worry free.

1+ for Cop.

Here I'm about to come in with a line about telling the cop the Light is on at krispy kreme and then you post those pics........ You should clean your gun

Yeah, a bit of "gunk" in there.... Maybe we should all post pics of our guns, without taking a chance to clean them first?

I like the idea, could bring us all into check.

I just finished cleaning it up, I am thoroughly convinced that the thing would have run great for a long time as it was though. I seems as all my grease had just turned black but everything sure was still slippery. I may rethink the grease though and try some motor oil like the AR gets. IDK. the whole reason for going to the grease was if I ever got lazy and didn't lube my CCW often enough was that grease would be what stayed in place and kept it slippery longest.

I use synthetic oil on my 1911. Doesn't gunk up, and seems to stay plenty slick.

I'm doing one too on my limited gun. Trying to get to 2000 rounds without a malf. Enos says that he went about 5000 with his slide glide between cleanings. I can see that with a super clean burning powder and a fully jacketed bullet. But it ain't happening with lead I can promise you that. I check it before each match to make sure she has lube in all the right places, but just put it back together. So far the glide is doing real well. But the gun is a gettin nasty! Only had two malfs and those were Wolf primers. So far so good, as I'm just past 1500.

O/P: Clean that thing man! I mean mine's that dirty and worse, but it's not my carry, you know?
