Getting started in hunting?

So what's a good way for someone to get started hunting? I've been into guns pretty much my whole life but no real hunting. I'm thinking more along the lines of deer/pig/varmint type hunting. I'm literally clueless on how to get started. Don't know how to find out where to go, don't know how to clean an animal, nothin..

Any suggestions?
I would seriously think about booking some hunts as a starter. You'll see if you really like hunting and you'll learn from the PHs.

Ok so just did a google search on guided hunts. Right now I'm interested in deer season end of this year. It looks like they run around 2500 for 3 days food, lodging, transportation etc included. Does anyone have anybody in particular they would recommend? Also where are the public places you all speak of? At the public places I suppose it's limited as to how many hunters are out per day or is it just a free for all with tons out there all going for the same game at the same time?

Google Okla wildlife department it lists the public areas and rules for the areas. There are a few places that limit hunters and it is usually done on a drawing basis. I think Arcadia lake still has a drawing but it is bow only, check with Edmond. There are quite a few deer there, usually not big. If you want to check out a hunting guide in an area check with the local game ranger. Their phones are listed on Okla wildlife dept. They may be limited on how much they can approve of an operator, but they will probably find a way to steer you clear of lousy ones. The plus on a guide service ( if the money is no object), you don't have to find you own land and scout it( which is what you would need to do) you won't be run over by other hunters, and they will usually help you at least field dress your deer, and some manage their game for bigger bucks and does. I have never had the $ bills to use one. I have gone on daily dove hunts because the hunting here in the close Okc metro has fallen off so bad. For 50 or 65$ it was worth it to me.

The wildlife dept usually lists the prior years deer harvests by county, that would kind of help you decide at least what county or region is a better choice.

These hunts your talking about are the controlled hunts. They are draw only and have to be entered via the ODW website. wildlifedepartment.com
The rules for entering are spelled out in the site.

I love going on the controlled hunts. It introduces a hunter into an area they are not familiar with, so they have to adapt to the current situation and use the skills they have learned to take the animal. I'm a flatland hunter, so I always put in for a hunt in terrain that might have rolling hills or mountains. (oxymoron......Mountains in OK. LoL)

Thanks guys found the info on controlled hunts. The application process opens April 1st with a deadline mid May. Sounds like a pretty cool deal. Ill submit an online application and hope my name gets drawn for one! Thanks
