FN SLP vs. Benelli M1 & M2

The facts stand that whether or not a benelli or FN or Remington (I own and 870 and wouldnt trade it period)really have differences, even though they are mostly based on second hand he said she said, they are all reliable shotguns.

:lol_hitting:

Second-hand? Moi?

Shoot a full season w/ the SLP and let's hear the report.

this ^^^ McGuire, It seems you're getting your butt hurt because most people prefer the Benelli over the FN. There's a very good reason that most prefer Benelli, it's called years of proven performance. The FN just hasn't proven itself as well as the Benelli yet. When/if it does, I'm sure people will be clammoring for the FN. Until that time though the majority of people will buy what already has the reputation and let others do the test and evaluation on those that haven't proven itself yet.

The FN company is very highly reguarded elsewhere with firearms and yes they have a lot of major military contracts, with machine guns, but that doesn't make them the best at shotguns. I'm not saying they're bad at shotguns because they're not. It was stated earlier in this thread that they're the 2nd best at auto shotguns. Not bad at all.
If you remember, years back Smith & Wesson who is very highly reguarded for their revolvers and semi auto pistols decided to make shotguns and they turned out to be complete turds. The name and reputation for a certain company's bread and butter doesn't mean that they will immediately excell in other areas. FN has done quite well in the auto shotgun world with the SLP so far, but they're still not quite up to par with Benelli.

If you want to stick with the FN then feel free, nobody is trying to talk you out of it. It seems though that you're trying to talk everyone else into switching to the FN from the Benelli which you'll be hard pressed to do. I wish you the best in your future endevors in the competition area. Give us a full report after a good season of 3-gunnin if you would please.

And the comment on second hand he said/she said.... quite a few of those comments are coming from professional competitors with many years under their belts. You know, the guys and gals that use this stuff everyday.

Are my posts not showing up? I have an SLP mk1 and I would rather have a Benelli. How is that second hand he said she said?

Is yours the mk1 or the regular SLP?

No, he's a big boy. He just has belief in his equipt. One good thing about Matt (McGuire) is that although he's opinionated, He's also open to learning. If He's wrong, he has no problem learning from it, just like the rest of us. At least that's my experience with him anyhow.

This isn't a "hey this is the only way & everything else sucks" type thread or group. It's just a bunch of shooters expressing what they believe from experience, not what they've read. That's what makes these conversations different here than on others forums. It's based on actual first hand experience, not just regurgitated reading from somewhere else.

Belief in equipment is a great thing to have and I'm glad he's staying true to what he knows.
And I'm not at all saying that it's Benelli or nothing. I hope that's not how it seemed.

I appreciate it tony, I know its hard to tell when your not talking to someone, and me and kurt had this issue as well, you really cant tell what I person is saying becasue you cant tell HOW they are saying it. I agree with all the points for Benellis and respect all the history and experience, I dont want anyone to think Im attacking anyone elses opinion, just trying to express mine. I realize there is a gold mine of experience and talent here, Im just hoping I can get close enough to soak some of that up so I can get better as a shooter and be more knowledgeable. I realize I have a tendency to be pretty strong in my opinions, for that I apologize, I dont want to come off as arrogant.

I think I will shoot this year with the FN, thick or thin and if it works for me, Ill have the proof, if it doesnt, then you can chalk one more up to the Church of Benelli converts. I just want to try and stay open to the chance that it is a good option. Granted Im a noob at three gun, Im not an idiot and I have been shooting and into firearms my whole life, young as I may be, and Im not insinutating that anyones calling me an idiot so no need to defend yourselves, Im just stating a fact. This is why I enjoy the people on BS, because everyones got strong ideas, and no ones afraid to put them out there, and it doesnt turn into a dick measuring contest. Im glad I found a group of guys who are as into guns as I am, and cool as hell to boot. So Im waving the white flag on this one, I appreciate everyones opinions and input.

i believe mines the regular version, but I got it from Kurt M and he did some work to it and so did FN if I recall. Its not like any of the ones Ive seen, It looks like the comp model but has no cantilever, I just ordered the NC 1 shot ext for the 10rnd total cap., NC bolt handle (tony wall is the man, order from tony wall!!!), and I called FN and got a rail for the reciever and Im gonna try an RMR on it and see how it goes. Dont know the rules well enough for 3gun to know if I can shoot that in comp but it has the FO front sight and the stock 10/22 rear so Ill be good either way. It only had about 50 rnds through it when I got it but I shot it yesterday and had not a single hiccup with about 5 different rounds, the cheap winchester walmart stuff (7 1/2), ranger low recoil buck, high brass 1.5oz slugs, or the 3 inch 00 that makes nate robinson shiver. Its an aminal so far. Only time will tell how reliable it will be, but im optomistic.

So is it 18" or 22"? Does it have chokes? Does it have the raised front sight post and ghost ring rear? I'm just curious.

Also if you put the reddot on it you will have to shoot open division. Which really isn't as big of a deal as everybody makes it out to be.
I also added the NC +1 extension and NC Bolt handle. The +1 extension is nice because you can pre-load to 9, then when you step up to go, rack it and you've got 8+1 which is tactical division capacity. But if you're in open division you won't have a division capacity.
Mine hates the winchester but has been choking on the federal stuff recently too. I think I have my mag spring trimmed too much and that's what is causing the misfeeds. I have a spare NC spring I am going to put in it before the next match.

I'd like to check it out and see the lifter and loading port. Mine needs some work there.

RMR puts you in open.

If KM has tinkered with it I expect it to run better than the average SLP. Hope it serves you well.

22" inch barrel, Imp Cyl choke, I need some more chokes, what do you suggest for that? it has a slightly raised FSP, with the fiber optic bead. I forgot to mention that Kurt worked the trigger as well. If cywrus does start doing the SLPs then I might have him do some work on mine. I noticed you cant ghost load the slp as well, a little disappointed about that but we cant have everything we want. I might try open div, I need to get to work on my AR if I do that though. Im gonna have to either get a magnifier or get a scope. Im running the eotech right now and for close range its great but at 2-300 its get s a little dicey, if i could work on getting my zero down on that Id might be okay. But for sure, if you want to come by and check out the shotgun just gimma a holler, Im over in NW OKC right now. Bring a carry gun or two with you. just saying... 443-799-8800

I got the whole set of Invector chokes. I keep light mod in most of the time.

You have the SLP MK1. Its a lot better than the regular 18" SLP. (better sights, larger magazine capacity) I hate the ghost ring sights.

Also I thought you COULD ghost load the SLP, just like the 930 SPX. I haven't tried it but I thought I read where it was possible.

Ive heard it is possible, but I talked to Kurt when I got it and he said I couldnt, may just be mine because of the work done to it, but I tried and the bolt doesnt go very far back before it pops the next round out onto the lifter. It just doesnt leave enough space to ghost a round before it loads the next round. I just looked at the receiver and mine says self loading police mk1, so you are right. I just picked up my +1 ext and bolt handle from tony tonight so now Im itching to get this thing out and try it. The rail should be here next week sometime.

your the bomb tony...btw

Benelli and FNs are two different animals. Recoil operated vs. gas gun. From an engineering standpoint the recoil operated is going to be more intrinsically reliable, but it has to operate in a narrower envelope. The gas gun on the other hand should be more forgiving about load variation (light/heavy) but will require more cleaning/maintenance to maintain it's reliability, and in theory probably won't hold up as long due the increased heat and carbon being introduced somewhere in the mechanical system, which the recoil gun doesn't have to deal with. Another example of recoil operation being rock solid reliable is the Browning A5. How may rounds did your grampa feed his? I've seen many of them that I just had to wonder they were so hammered. And yet they still run good. Now just how many rounds of difference between recoil vs. gas may be too few to matter to most of us. Only time will tell and I don't know if the jury is in yet on the FN holding up to 130K+ rounds. I think it's safe to say that it will withstand far more rounds than the average bird hunter will fire but how many rounds is that?

My SLP is the softest recoiling 12 gauge I think I've ever shot. But the Benellis that I've fondled were a bit lighter and pointed better/quicker. Pick your poison...

Since you're doing the SLP thing make sure you keep an eye on your piston, if the spring breaks you get all kinds of strange behavior. There is a rather precarious balance of springs in the things and you may have to fiddle with the lifter spring to get it to run. You may also have to cut a slot down the middle of your lifter like a Benelli.

I don't know what to tell you about 870's though, you couldn't give me another one of those. Fool me once and all that jazz.
