Some of you know how I feel about the Self-Defense Act in general. If not, catch me sometime with a half bottle of wine in me (and not carrying) and I will tell you.

As you also know there are certain places that are statutorily off-limits for conceal or open carry. I don't really agree with most of them, because some of those are places that shootings have occurred on a regular basis. However, one of them in particular stands out as a "WTF".

TITLE 21 § 1277 UNLAWFUL CARRY IN CERTAIN PLACES

Section A.5. Any sports arena during a professional sporting event

Who was sitting around the room when the "off-limits places" were being discussed and yelled "PROFESSIONAL SPORTING EVENT"? Then the other people in the room discussed it like real smart people do and finally arrived at "Any sports arena during a professional sporting event"

Not regular sporting events like high school hockey, city league basketball, or Softball. No, PROFESSIONAL sporting events! Someone decided that we shouldn't carry in a professional sporting event but other sporting events, that's cool.

The deciding factor in these people's mind on whether we should be allowed to carry was whether or not the athletes were being paid? Seriously?

Example of the ludicrous-ness:
  • I can carry when watching my OSU Cowboys play basketball but not when watching the OKC Thunder.
  • I can carry while watching Pinto's kids play hockey but not when watching the OKC Barons
  • I can carry while watching Lance's kids wrestle but not when watching Hacksaw Jim Duggan
  • I can carry while watching My godson riding bulls or roping but not when watching the IFR

If anyone can come up with a logical reason why this section makes sense, even to a politician, I beg you to make it known

Because sports fans are crazy! No seriously there are a lot of fights at sports events in general and when your packed into a stadium with thousands of people I wouldn't want to have to take a shot at someone. Good thing I think non shooting sports are stupid...

So its because of the density of the crowd/attendees? There are a lot of places besides a Thunder game that one shouldn't be shooting into crowds.

I agree and was being facetious. I make a decision when I go anywhere and If I didn't feel comfortable and couldn't carry I wouldn't go. But I also know concealed is concealed. If I went to a pro sporting event I would also be drinking just to make it through so I really shouldn't be carrying there anyway.

I believe that law was directed more to the participants than the spectators.

Not all of the Dallas Cowboys are prohibited from concealed carry (i.e. does not have a felony conviction yet).

Just tried to make it a level playing field.

Maybe it's because they were used to coaching or refereeing a kids baseball game and they knew it would be suicidal to exempt carry at those events.

Money. That's the whole reason. Pro sports, to a politician or PAC or activist, means betting. Betting leads to losing and losing leads to anger. Anger leads to shooting someone (never mind the fact that it is illegal) and we should be dis-armed so we won't lose or money and kill a bookie (again...not something a legal carrier will do)

I had to hide my knife in a flower pot/barricade in Cleveland Ohio before going to cavs game when I saw them using the wands, and yes, they did go below the waist at that venue.

It's probably the "law-makers" looking at the stats of the higher rates of potentially being in a area that cause aggression. Professional sports is probably on this list, and it probably shows that fights or acts of aggression that happens more there than lower valued sporting events (i.e. little-league, high-school and even college). This is the same list that you will find bars, clubs, and areas that the main sales are alcohol.

It doesn't make it right because in my opinion you should be allowed to carry wherever you want too (unless you are impaired). Just one way the "law-makers" can limit the law-abiding citizens.

Just my 2 cents.

Those metal-detecting wands never make it lower than your waist. Just sayin'
I disarmed for the Alamobowl because I found out it was against Texas law to carry there. The recoverying meth head running the metal detecting wand might as well not even used it. Phone didn't alarm, benchmade knife, didn't alarm, keys, swiss army knife didn't alarm, surefire light didn't alarm. And they never wanded past the hips.

I think the big argument would be for the professional athletes and they don't want someone shooting a for example football player let's take Romo for example after a bad game. Then someone just took out a multi-million dollar player, they are not worried about kids or collage students because in there eyes they are not worth as much as the professional athletes.

Not sure if that is the actual reason or not and personally I think it's stupid. I am actually nervous about going back to college to get my degree simply for the fact that I am not allowed to carry on campus. I have my CHL, Prior military, and a constant shooter but that does not qualify me to carry. Simply put........Stupid.

I doubt this is the only law in Oklahoma that don't make sense. Legislators legislate. Allowing concealed or open carry everywhere, with no exceptions, takes them out of the loop and they lose power and influence. They're like liberals in that they have to have their hands in everything; control it, tax it, regulate it, or ban it. They think laws like this prevent the singular event, however remote, that something bad could happen at a professional sporting event. To the earlier point....like a meth head (or anyone for that matter) with a wand is going to stop a motivated criminal. The quickest resolution to that unfortunate event would in fact be someone exercising their constitutional right to carry a firearm if they chose.

You're being awfully generous to the level of due diligence these people give to legislating
