chronograph

One thing I've been glad to see become more available have been chronographs. There've been a lot of myths and junk reloading science debunked due to better chronograph availability. I remember when they were fairly expensive luxury items and not particularly reliable. I had a neighbor in high school who was part owner in a then-state-of-the-art Oehler. I don't recall what model it was, but it took a hell of a lot of set up to get it working. Now I can carry my little Shooting Chrony to the range and be ready to go in 5 minutes or less. I've had an Alpha model for several years, but I'm thinking more and more of upgrading to a Beta model to get a PC interface.

Since I am going to start loading different calibers and also more confident with my reloading skills to play around with different loads I am Thinking about getting this one for myself for Christmas. What do you guys think, and is easy to use for a dumb ass like myself?
You really need one :-)

Dude, ProChrono you turn on and start shooting. It's too easy.
This right here.

I sold my CED because it was notorious for not picking up shots and it was a pain to setup and take down. If you get a CED put it in a box with the inside painted black and run the IR lights or just get a couple of 12V lights and hang in there, ala Kurt Miller. About the only gripe I have about the Pro Chrono is that it will only hold 9 strings but it works every time and that's what I want.

Late one night around the campfire at deer camp.

Semi-pro: I've got a load that will push a 130 grain out of my .270 to 4000fps.

Me: That's interesting. Did you run the load across a chronograph?

Semi-pro: No, I calculated the velocity.

Me: Mind telling me how you did that?

Semi-pro: I read that for every quarter grain of powder you get 100 fps faster, so I just increased the powder load.

Me: Any signs of over pressure?

Semi-pro: Not really, but the rounds are hard to eject sometimes.

Me: Do you have good life insurance?

I think you know how the rest of the story is going to develop.

His 4000 fps load actually ran 3300fps, with primers flattened, and perforated, etc.

Chronographs are the best myth buster on the market.

The things that stand out most in my mind are the debunking of the mystique of the Ackley "improved" wildcats and pressure gauging based on bolt lift.
