2012 3 Gun Nation Pro Series Event #1 March 31, 2012

One of the dangers of cumilative time scoring is that it brings a potential catastrophe scenario into the picture. A guy has a mechanical, ammo or other issue at the beginning of the stage (that may not be in any way his fault) and it takes him completely out of the match, or even looses him his pro card in a worst case scenario.

I shot the AR15 targets Texas 2 Gun match last year and 2 stages in a WEEK OLD EoTech with a BRAND NEW battery went down on me in the middle of an all-rifle stage. I had to basically dump ammo to "engage" targets and point shoot stuff at 100 yards and took over 220 seconds in penalties on that stage in a cumulative time match where the total stage times were in the 40-50 second range.

Bruce Piatt was on my squad and had a problem with his bolt locking back just before a stage on his shotgun and swapped trigger groups with another guy just minutes before shooting a stage. Had that happened during the course of fire, one of the best guys in the sport is instantly in last place in the standings.

That sort of thing could happen to anybody with cumulative scoring, and I can tell you first hand that you do not want to be that guy.
 
I failed to make my post clear. I "liken" the Pro Series format to Steel Challenge ONLY in that a failure of any kind puts you way back in the pack! This Pro format puts a lot of pressure on a perfect performance and perfect equipment (yes anything mechanical can fail). I was not promoting nor demeaning the scoring system just making an observation.

The Pro Series is what it is and I for one knew what the scoring format was before I showed up at the match, good bad or otherwise this is how this game will be played for one more match (June 16th Georgia). Perhaps things will change for 2013, either way I do my best to play well enough to earn a spot in the rotation.
 
Thanks for the warm welcome, Jesse. I heard this was where the cool kids hang out and followed you guys over. :)

Due to the option of engaging targets w/ pistol instead of rifle, I considered holstering the hot pistol just to have it with me in case the rifle went down. But, hot holstering on the clock is not something I do very fast, so I opted to dump the handgun when it wasn't needed on #2 and #4.

The one thing that concerned me before the match about scoring was the minor penalties for not engaging or missing targets. But, looking at the top 10, it looks like about 1/2 of the guys didn't use this as a technique, only had a bad shot somewhere or another. (Like Pat's blistering run on stage #3, coming up w/ one FTN.)

I expect we'll see total time scoring again at Covington. I don't know if that causes shooters to run a little more conservative or not.
 
Heck a 2.5 second penaltie on stage 3 was a 10% penalty!!! I didn't like the 2.5 seconds on steel. Half of our squad chose to not shoot the large rifle plates on stage 1 because the time was a wash. I want to shoot all the targets! Or at least try to.

You are correct in that Pat. To get into that top 10 you had to shoot pretty much a perfect match. I thought I was toast after having a FTN and and unit piece of steel on my first two stages. I was pleasanlty suprised with 14th.

You gotta use smiley's! I stalked and beat down a guy that made fun of me on a forum once. Turned out he was joiking and didn't know about the use smiley's rule to show sarcasim.

p.s. Cyrwus, I am still very sorry about that beating. I hope soemday you will forgive me. I know the boys will never be the same but hey you weren't gonna have kids anyway, right? :sarcastichand:

Everything was 2.5 seconds. FTN, 2.5, unhit paper another 2.5, FTE another 2.5, unhit steel 2.5 It didn't pay to make up a shot after you left the target.
 
Chambers you pull the trigger so fast, you could have probably shot this match without ever leaving a starting box and finished mid-pack. :)

I am right with you Pat. I knew what we were doing when we got there too (though I was nervous about it :)). I will say that overall, the format was awesome. Had a real PGA tour feel to it.
