linear compensator?

I bought a custom built AR in 243WSSM before the obimination took office.

I thought the linear comp looked awesome, and ordered it to be installed. I couldn't keep a group within 8" at 100 yds. Sucked, and it got sent back.
He test fired it again and finally said that he couldn't keep a group either. Took it off and made a thread protector, sent it back and its a tack driver.
Not to say that it may work on your rifle, but it didn't on mine.

It looks like the gas would deflect the bullet. The coaxial pattern looks minimally effective.

How many shots are you wanting, or thinking you are going to, get off in rapid succession where you are concerned about muzzle climb?

To elaborate on my previous post..

When I'm hunting, the first shot is really all that counts. Even with three or four coyotes running in, the first shot is really the only one that's going to be a good one. After the remaining coyotes scatter, and I determine they're not going to circle back, and I start shooting, I'm not thinking to myself 'man, if only I had a compensator to control this dadgum muzzle climb..'. I don't think it would do me a damn bit of good, especially in an AR platform where recoil is minimal anyways. Even with a bolt gun you have to work the action so you're not going to stay on target.

So what I'm saying basically is really think about your Hunting application really think about how much of a difference it will make in you putting more fur/meat on the ground. If you jus absolutely want to try it, go ahead. But if it screws with your consistency/accuracy, then I guess you have your answer.

Those two objectives are not obtainable with breaks or compensators without hearing protection of some sort.

Your correct. When I ordered mine, I knew it was not going to be quiet, but it was danged sure more quiet than a rolling thunder comp! :D

Thanks for the input guys. I know its going to be loud hence the " " around hearing safe. Wormy I agree with what you are saying. I have seldom had to take a follow up shot while hunting. I'm going to have to put something on the end of the barrel so I'm just researching my options.

I mean follow up shots are sometimes necessary don't get me wrong there. But you're more than likely going to be shooting a running animal and your nerves will be all hell crazy. I dunno just doesn't seem like a comp would be worth it. I had a crowned barrel on my coyote AR and had to get it threaded to put my suppressor mount on it.

My ex wanted to go deer hunting with me but she thought my 25-06 kicked too hard ??? dang girls so me being the good dude I went and had a break put on by Steve, it worked well but damn it was loud! I don't know about everyone else but I don't wear earplugs while hunting as I hear most stuff before I see them.

The 6.8 doesn't kick much at all so just curious why the wanting a break? I'm not talking down at you for wanting one but just curious. My 284 thumps the hell out of you but follow up shots are not that difficult and truth I've never felt that rifle kick yet shooting at a game animal! I really dread those 400 yard plates though :-)

Here's the thing about muzzle breaks if they ain't loud they don't work! that gas has to fight the recoil the recoil is going backward so the gas has to be redirected rearward to counteract the recoil, all that gas is coming back your direction so it's gonna be louder. Later,

Kirk

I understand that statement about hearing the game before you see them.
I had that same frame of mind, and used that to justify not wearing hearing protection while in the field. I've hunted for 40+ years without hearing protection, using high powered centerfire rifles and pistols, as well as rimfire. I"m a badass, and don't need hearing protection was my attitude.
Continue that practice, and you will be in my position. I have $3000.00 of hearing aids in EACH EAR. 6 grand total. I have a hard time with speach comprehension, even with the aids, have to constantly say "huh",
I got examined by one of the best audio Doctors in the country, and he said that constant exposure to gunfire is the worst thing for the nerves in your inner ear.
It is not reversible, so don't believe all of these full page ads in the newspapers touting they can restore your hearing to "normal".
PROTECT YOUR HEARING! A deer is not worth it.
My advice to you is to put up some $ and get some of the Walker Game ears.
When you hear a deer coming through the leaves, and have them in, they will shut down the muzzle blast before it gets to the nerves in your ear. Electronics work at the speed of light that is is much faster than the speed of sound. So, with the walker game ears being digital, it will comp the noise before it gets to your ears.

Trust me, the embarassment of not having good hearing in a restaurant, around friends, etc, is not worth taking the time to protect your hearing.

Dennis, I hear ya and not being smart! my left ear is bad enough that I can tell the difference but that was from all the shooting prior to knowing what an ear plug was! I just got some custom fits from Al and they are awesome and very comfortable so I wear them. I really don't hunt that much anymore due to places to hunt close are well not there really. I'm sure I'll end up getting some of the Walkers or some other form of protection, out West I do wear my plugs as I can see the animals prior to hearing.

Brian, I'm not bashin' on ya dude! anything folks want to do to thier guns I'm all about. In 3-gun your looking for fast follow up double taps on targets and truth if I didn't shoot 3-gun I'd not have a break on my AR. I have one gun with a break but it's a 7WSM pistol so it's kinda got to have one LOL Later,

Kirk

You guys take it easy on Brian. A little guy like him might need a brake for a big gun like the 6.8. LOL!!

lol Thanks Jason. I just dont know if my 6'5" 330lb frame can handle the recoil from that 110 grain bullet without one!

So what would you guys recommend I put on the end of the barrel? Its threaded 5/8 x 24.
