Talk me into going to my first match

Jesse is RO'ing while Brandon is shooting. If you listen closely you can even hear Jesse (the R.O.) laughing (right next to him) during Brandon's run. And yes we were all leaning, trying to help, exactly like Jesse described.

I'm not afraid of being made fun of. I'm a horrible shot with a pistol past 10 yards. I just don't think I could make the dedication to going to all or even most of the matches. Say If there were 20 matches in 1 year I might be able to make 3 or 4 depending on where I'm working at that time. I'm definatly going to try to come watch one just to see what it's all about.

Don't watch - bring your pistol - TRUST ME - even if you only shoot a few a year - its 100 times better than shooting at a paper target over and over

Most everything we shoot at is big like human sized so you don't have to be that good with the accuracy to have a great time. Heck I have seen guys smile ear to ear while not hitting a damn thing. Oh wait that was me. ;)

Wasn't this your first match at OKCGC and your first match thatcyiu got DQ'd firctryingvti shoot the targets both forwards and backwards too?

You'd best just bring your gun, rather than wishing you had. We've actually geared guys up with borrowed guns & ammo when they were foolish enough to try and "just come watch". To a person, every one of them was glad they shot the match afterward. Many have since become regulars.

Of course, not everyone is so die hard about it that they'd actually go borrow a Rascal just to shoot! :D

He admitted that he practiced dry fire drills off that thing before the last 3gun match.

I don't know Jesse, so I wasn't sure if he did that because he is so die hard or if he just did it for the laughs. In either case, I applaud his effort. Bravo!!!

Also, thanks for the lead on Robert Carlile. I got in touch with him. He is indeed the guy I knew from many years ago. He apparently has a range at his house and was kind enough to invite me there to go over the basics of everything, from handling my weapon in a safe manner, obeying range commands, what to expect at a match, and maybe even some shooting instruction if we have time and the weather is kind. Anyway, reconnecting with him was great and the opportunity to learn from someone like himself is even better. Thanks again.

Actually, I was hoping you wouldn't remember that.

See it can't get more embarassing than that!!! Tony kept coming back after the worst first match you can have. He is even really close to not sucking anymore.

On a similar note, I talked my father-in-law into shooting the Heartland match with me for his first match 3 or 4 months ago. On his second stage he missed a bunch of popper targets and ran out of bullets in his snubby revolver. He got mad like we all do and lost his composure. He put his gun down at his side and then turned around to walk back up range before he holstered up breaking the 180°. I had to DQ my own father-in-law who is also my boss!!!

He has shot every Heartland match since trying to get better and more familiar wit his guns. He realized just how little he knew about his pistols and that he really wasn't ready to defend himself with one if he would ever have to. He has since bought a gun that fits him better and has sights he can see. In just 3 matches he has gotten a lot better.

Excellent!!! Boomer Shooter is on target on this one for sure!

What all gear do I need? Right now here is the gear I have. Pistol wise I have a Glock 17 and a crossbreed iwb holster and 1 mag no mag holders(gave my second one to my sister for glock). I'm not sure about 3 gun but, here is what I would have for that:

Pistol: Same Glock
AR: heavy ass 16" carbine with a rifle length 4 rail handguard
Shotgun: Camo Benelli M2 that only holds 3 rounds(dove hunting gun) or I have a 18" Remington 870

I've been thinking about getting involved. Considering the idea of trying my hand at Steel Challenge. Is Practical Shooting in McLoud still doing it? The link provided is busted...

You need at least a couple more mags (say 2 more for the Heartland match/Steel Challenge, 3 more for USPSA to be safe) and mag holders for them.

For 3-gun, sounds like you've got your bases covered. You will want some shotshell caddies or another way to hold shotgun shells on your person.

I don't think they've had it in a few months. OKCGC has a SC challenge match every month as well.

Thanks, I appreciate that.
I'm still calling BS on breaking the 180.
I think the R.O. was just being a prick.
He offered to let it slide if I gave him 5 bucks.
