Well I went today to grab my Stag Arms AR15 that I had them holding for me until I could get there to pick it up along with a Glock G19 gen5 (my first Glock, ever)
Now my dilemma is I need sights or an optic or both for it.
Anyone have any recommendations on what works well for short range accuracy on a human size target at lets say 200yds or less. I want simple easy to use and rugged!

I'm not even sure what type of sight I want a scope, holographic or red dot but I need recommendations for some of each style with pluses and minuses!
Let's try to keep it in the $5-600 range and less is better if the quality is there. I believe in you get what you pay for but I've never been one to spend more on an optic than the firearm cost.

Also with my bad eyes it's just not money well spent when the glass is 10x clearer than my eyes can focus on anyways.

I don't do battle drills or shoot for distance or super accuracy so please keep that in mind.1A6508F2-8C34-4041-AD73-4C7156F4468D.jpeg

Nice rifle brother! IMHO, the Aimpoint PRO (Patrol Rifle Optic) is a great bang for the buck. It's pretty much indestructible. Here's a link to a review. It's priced around $450

Just a "heads up" You mentioned bad eyes. I have astigmatism and the dot looks like a starburst in the house. When outside using the lowest setting that allows me to clearly see the dot, I don't experience this. You may have that problem too with red dot sights. It is still a good CQB sight, as it still is effective even if it has the starburst effect in low light. Any red dot will do this as it's not the dot, but your eyes doing it.

You did say fast hits at 0 to 200 yards. Right Bob? This Leupold works great for me, I felt no need for a Mil Dot reticle like on my 0 to 800 yard rifles.

This scope works very well in low light, after it's too dark to shoot irons.

Currently I have four of the Primary Arms sights as pictured. The oldest about five years old.
These were recommended to me by a Gunsmith who has assembled several hundred AR's in the $1500.00 to $3,000.00 range. Red Dot's by most top tier makers have been tried but these just plain work. The price is attractive, battery life 50,000 hours and they occasionally can be purchased with a free full Co-Witness mount. Just have to watch the Primary Arms news letter for that.
The rifle pictured had a full Co-Witness mount. Also have a set of Magpul MBUS type sights for it chosen for their light weight.
The rifle with the MBUS attached, and empty 30 round magazine inserted weighs 5# 15 oz. 4B4424B0-5A55-4D2D-9AD2-C2B3DF3E1BB4.jpegC0CA8041-3C55-4DC1-BD33-2ABE6C820A56.jpeg

Awesome guys I'm going to be reading up snd see if my local shop has these to look and through in hand and see what might fit my needs. Any thoughts on Eotechs lower priced optics? Just asking because I have a friend that swears by them and Acogs but those are out of the range I'm willing to spend.

I don't have any personal experience with Eotech optics, but I've never heard anything but good comments about them. I've also heard the Sig Sauer Romeo red dots are excellent. I know several people who say the Vortex red dots are poorly made, though I have never owned one myself.

another vote for aimpoint pro, mines about 5 or 6 years old, still functions like new.
on wifes S&W installed the primary arms gen2 (much longer battery life) and it also has never missed a beat.

I ran an ACOG decade before last and I don't think theres a finer battle optic available. Time one buys the eotech and the magnifier to equal the ACOG, the money is the same and the eotech eats up a lot of rail with the magnifier and uses batteries!! To me the choice between those 2 is a no brainer.

Good luck in your choice

Curious. Did you replace the mount that came with the Aimpoint? I couldn't get mine to maintain zero if I removed it. I replaced it with a quick release mount made by American Defense and it will come right back to zero if removed....which I rarely do anyway. The ADM mount is very well made. I bought one to mount my weapon light too.

I haven't had any issues with the aimpoint mount at all. But now that its planted in my brain, I'll be forever checking. I will check out the mount you suggest, because who doesn't enjoy seeing the fedex truck arrive?

CECannonJr, can you verify which ADM you used for your Aimpoint PRO? I can send them a tech email, but if you know thats better. Do you co-witness with buis?
Like the mount and would upgrade to it once I can verify it will work an an aimpoint pro and co-witness with daniel defense buis already installed.
Thanks in advance

Good morning Switchback. I used the AD-68 standard mount. It provides an absolute cowitness with a set of Wilson Combat rail mount BUS's, which are the same height as the DD models. The mounts are hard to find right now. I provided a link below for information about the mount at Bravo Company's site, but I see they are out of stock. You may find them somewhere, I'll look around and let you know if I find anything available.

Found one! It will be the first one at the top. I can't vouch for the seller. I haven't done business with them. I bought mine from Brownells, but they don't appear to have any right now.

I'm sold on "Shake-Wake" red dots that light up the second you lift them, Romeo 5 has gotten a lot of rough handling and works well, but have been looking at and getting used to a 2.5X prism scope. Astigmatism not a problem as reticle is etched in, also helps if you take a battery death as even without power the reticle is there. Offset irons once again take prize for up close ranges, flick of the wrist and reaching out to touch something up my comfort level in 5.56/7.62 (250/300 yards, they go further but ?) If I'm long ranging then dedicated distance optic and dial in a .308..or your flavor. Cons - heavier than most compact red dots if weight is issue. Agree on Aimpoint and ACOG survivability and function, just a tougher nut to chew financially in my book, but as they say "How much is your life worth?" is a question we answer every day with the CCW/HDW we stake our and families lives on. I once told my wife the old saying "Buy once, Cry once" when it comes to big money important purchases (gun related)...she didn't skip a beat and said "Is that why you had a tear in your eye when we got married?"

Well you've all given me a lot to think about and I agree that under 2-300 yds iron sights are the most reliable and that's what I use on most of my ARs and semi auto rifles as well as all pistols. I don't have a single handgun with optics.

I have scopes for longer ranges on my AR10 and bolt action .308s
I'm just wanting to try some closer quarter sights to see what I can make work for me.

Sounds just like something my wife would say. o_O

I have a few optics, an AimPoint T1 and a AimPoint Comp m3 as well as an EoTech.

A quality optic is the best choice, for me. Battery life as well as durability are key points for me. Quality optics are a bit more expensive than the cheaper models.

Over the years, I've learned, "buy once, cry once". I've spent a good amount of money on bits that were later replaced with higher quality.

I could loan you an optic to try if you like. Pm me if you like

I bought a red dot years ago..think it's an Aim point. Tried it & removed it..I do target shooting, trying to put shots in a 1"square.
The red dot I have isn't precise enough, for me.. the dot covers too much of the target. Almost bought some MagPul BUS, but discovered they were made a plastic, so bought some real steel iron sights..think they were Yankee Hill. Ended up putting scopes & 1 piece mounts on all 4 of my Ar's ,.
Have scopes in various powers from Bushnell, Vortex, Burris, & even a Simmons..they all work well for my use.
