Carry Gun Match - February 5 Heartland Outdoors

Well, my attempt to "go fast" on stage 1 didn't exactly pan out. LB wanted me to give it a go to see what I could do and get out of my normal cadence. Kind of blew it up with the penalties.

I probably need to try to pick up some speed, but not go faster than I can manage my hits. Lessons learned, kind of like OJT.

when i was putting in the scores, i was thinking that stage is very unlike steve to have that many penalties... well at least you learned a lesson.. never listen to LB :)

Yep.

I think Jesse gave me the best advice when I first came to a match: Work on accuracy first, speed will come later. (or not)

Didn't know you were listening....

He's been wearing longer shorts and a Tee Shirt.

Outrunning your ability to focus the sights its a giant problem. Learning to do that after your in bifocals is nearly impossible. Not side stepping into the shooter's box cost me about half my points down.

Dumb shoote's box

I was going to make an honest comparison this match by shooting a Kahr PM9 with Crimson Trace Laser sights and Shannon's PM9 without laser. I made several dumb mistakes with both so that turned into a fiasco. I do find shooting a small gun like the Kahr from concealment to be a real challenging thing to do well. I'm confident that in a real situation I could safely draw and put a shot on the target in somewhat less than 5 minutes. Might not be the right target but I could shoot somebody.
Seriously, I do think I shoot the laser gun a little better and as the CT advertisement says "especially from unconventional positions". It was a fun match, even if I sucked.

Mike, I'm glad you used this match to compare such worthwhile things like which gun or set-up you shoot better under pressure. This is the perfect match to do exactly that.

Now, I don't want to give too much away, but that laser will come in very handy at the next Carrygun Match......

To give LB some credit, he told me he'd noticed that my hits had been better and I had shot a couple of matches clean and another 1 or 2 with only 1 Delta, so I should try to pick up my speed.

I need to find a balance of speeding up with maybe getting a few penalties and stay at that pace until I can run it better.

As I say in my Speed Skills class: "take all the time you need to make the shot...but not one micro-second longer."

There was some interest expressed in holding yet another "Essential Handgun Skills" class in the next couple of weeks.

The last one was discussed a little bit in the "Photos" heading.

PM me for more specifics.
