I am considering buying a new bolt gun & I have got it down to 2.
either the American Ranch in 556 (model 6965) or an American
predator in 223 (model 6944). will be mostly shot across an open
field at targets, paper, steel, crows, maybe a coyote. any thoughts?

The Ranch seems to be a little shorter and threaded, correct? That seems to be the only major difference I see.....if that's the case, then I'd be all over the Ranch model if you possess a can. What distances do you plan on engaging said coyotes and paper?

don't have a silencer. both barrels are threaded I think. the biggest difference is, predator is 223, 22" barrel & rancher is
16.5", chambered for 556. shots will probably be 1 to 300 yards.

According to the spec sheets, both have 1:8 twist bbls, both are threaded. The big difference is bbl length (16" vs 22") and caliber (5.56 vs .223).

On the caliber front, you can shoot .223 in a 5.56 chamber. 5.56 is not necessarily the best in a .223 chamber though. You may get FTE or other issues. The looser 5.56 chamber is not as conducive to pin point accuracy as the tighter .223 chamber. We're talking a small difference though on the order of maybe 0.25-0.5 MOA.

On the length front, the longer bbl will give more velocity which is important for maximum fragmentation distance with the 5.56/.223 round if you're using it on meat. A 16" bbl with ball ammo will give 3125 FPS, which gives good tumbling and frag out to somewhere around 100ish meters. 20" will get you 3250 FPS which extends the high probability of frag range out to 150ish meters. Premium ammo like MK262 will frag at lower velocities and longer ranges. You get little benefit beyond 20".

So it all depends on desired usage. The Predator will be a better varmint rifle, with mayble slightly better accuracy and longer effective ranges on meat. The Ranch will be handier and usable with a wider variety of ammo. I would personally opt for the Ranch as I have a ton of 5.56 ball stocked up and appreciate the handiness.

Shooting 556 was 1 of my reasons I am leaning towards the rancher. I wonder what the chamber differences are
between the way Ruger builds them? I know the mini 14 I have doesn't seam to care whether it is 556 or 223.
I don't guess it matters much as my local store can not get me either 1 yet.

Congrats! So you got the 16" threaded barrel in 5.56? You should consider putting on a standard flash hider (the kind that you see on most stock AR-15's). One reason? To keep you from plugging the barrel if you plant it in the dirt.

As for scope, I reccomend getting the lowest power you can deal with. Helps with finding your target fast. And don't buy a scope without putting your eye to it. An important factor is getting the proper eye relief (distance from your eye to the scope where you don't see a black ring).
