So I (my department) just received shipment of a couple crates containing M16s, not A1s, but 16s. Military surplus. They were Air Force apparently, as they have no forward assist and no brass deflectors. Best I can tell, they are vintage 1964. Triangle handguards thar shine like spit polished boots. Freaking awesome. Now I have to spend the week armoring them. Good bye to the "go fast" sears. Sad.

While I was in USAF (security police '83-'87), my M16 was a Vietnam era firearm with the 3-prong surpressor. Damn gun was worn down when I got it but it still functioned well. That's the last time I ever handled a black rifle.

Troy, if the fun stuff goes away, what the hell does the department want with them? Were they free or something?

Just thinking out loud here. There are about a million better options for a semi-auto LE rifle.

there is a program that allows government agencies to borrow the guns. the state collects either 25 or 35 dollars per gun to do the paper work. The agency determines if they want to keep the giggle switch or not. The guns have to be able to be returned to the same condition as received. This is how the game wardens got M-14's... they also had the giggle switch locked out or removed.

full auto is fun but not all that practical in a LEO setting.

Seems like this would just be a training issue of when/when not to use it.

I understand the praticality issue, I just don't like the idea of our LEO's being out gunned. The thugs sure aren't going to remove the FA capabilities.

To bad we have some of those funky Gun Control laws. If your agency could sell those M16's on the legal Class 3 market... you guys would be knee deep in new patrol cars for 10 years.

In my home town county... the SO liberated 2 '21 Thompsons from some Chicago Gangsters. By law... they have to keep them in evidence or cut them up for disposal. Value has been estimated over $200,000 a few years ago... both have links to the Valentines Day Shootings and the Capone gang.

Those guns come out for "open houses" at the SO and get fired now and then.... it's a shame to keep history locked up- but the law forces it.

Agree w/ Chris on this one.

Most cops need to learn how to shoot their handguns first. :-X

Yeah, SWAT guys usually have more "higher end" gear (supressors, full-auto or burst, etc). But the average patrol guy.....no way. You guys would be scared if you knew how many rounds the "average" police officer fires in a year........Any one care to guess?

And Chambers, was that a slam on moi?

100 pistol just to qualify

200 rounds? I know it ain't much, and that I am very scared.

Wasn't talking about you, silly. I am proud to know the half dozen cops in the state that are truly proficient shooters.

And to answer Hearn's question......ChrisC nailed it. We got em for 30 bucks each. This will finish out our patrol division. Every officer will be issued a semi-auto AR pattern. Our SWAT guys have theirs a little more geared up.

I'm pretty proud that I was able to get them. It's pretty rare that a department our size can outfit an entire patrol division with rifles and shotguns.

Are we outgunned by not having full-auto? I don't think so. I think at semi-auto we are on a level playing field, generally speaking.
Will there always be a super badguy with amazing weaponry at his disposal? Certainly. Would I put any of you 3-Gunners up against him (skill vs skill)? ABSOLUTELY. It's the Indian, not the arrow......

I'd like to see USPSA add a "Duty" division. Yeah, I know....we have Production and you can shoot it in your duty gear.

Maybe reduce the membership fees or match fees. Would I pay full price? Yep, I am now. Would it attract more of my brethern? It could.

I've taken more cops to matches only to have them never return cuz they got their feelers hurt because they got beat up by a bunch of civilians. That's just something they need to get over. Maybe if they had their own division, and played against each other, it wouldn't matter.

I thought I was hot elephant dung with a pistol. And in the cop world I was. Then I went to my first match. And got my arse handed to me by a bunch of computer guys, a geologist, a gunsmith, a locksmith, a postmaster, etc.....Woke me up.

People think that cops get to shoot as much as we want. They only see one very very small facet of our job description. To assume a cop is a shooter, is like saying if you rodeo then you must be a real cowboy (thanks Will Andrews for the quote). ChrisC and countless others on here can back me on this....most cops I know spend their free time working extra jobs to make ends meet. Most can't afford to get out and shoot like you guys do. It's sad, and it's not much of an excuse, but that is the reality. Hell, I've had to start in kydex so I can buy groceries. (Ok, pay scale rant is over).

This is classic.

Troy, sorry buddy, I really wasn't trying to stir the pot.
I just don't like to see your hands tied to a disadvantage on equiptment. FA or not, congrats on the new rifles, I hope they make a difference.
