OK, please trust me when i say my wife will not carry a gun (biggest fight in our 9 year marriage was me buying a gun!!).. so here is the background..
My wife likes to bike (especially around lake hefner) and twice now she has had people "pace" her while staring at her for miles and yesterday a gun got off of his motorcycle (after pacing her for miles) and try to "come towards her", she is a little freaked out obviously... So she wants something, but here is my question,

She is leaning towards pepper spray, which i am afraid she won't carry it or even if she does have trouble operating it under stress or even "miss" and then the guy would just grab her arm. I am leaning towards a knife, because she can carry it and she doesn't have to be "accurate" and most people will get more nervous about a blade than pepper spray.

thoughts?? (also i don't own a knife and don't know much about knifes so i am open to suggestions)

Taser! I have both used and been hit by one(in training). Not as expensive as a gun and taser international used to replace them if you use it in self defense(set for 30 sec drop and run) and send them the police report they might still do this. They are small and more effective then pepper spray.

They arnt that bad the civi models are slim and smooth also they come in a varity of colors from pink to zebra. I do believe they make holster for them.

Also I agree on the knife. In untrained hands it could be self destructive. I have practiced knife techniques for years and still would not chose it as my first or last defense. If your in a knife fight your gonna get cut. If it is the decision to carry one I suggest seeking training!

she is alot like me, she has no friends!!! hahahaha she just likes to go riding when she can... maybe i will check more into taser... which model is best??

The only ones you can get are the ones marketed to civis unless your LEO as far as I know. Go to taser internationals web site http://www.taser.com/ they have lots of info. And I personally wouldn't rely on anything less (brand wise) I wanna say they are in the $200-300 range at acadamey as with everything research it, then train with it once you get it. They are simple but require a little practice. And know how about your target placement range and clothing considerations as they can arc through a total of 2in of clothing past the barbs all together. Also look for some classes on it. I got mine via security training. I do believe there are a few places you can get this training spread throughout ok. Also check your local laws on carrying one.

Also the civilian models are the only ones that let you set them to 30secs not as powerful as the LE version but works just the same the stronger your muscles the harder they work against you.

I bought my wife one of the OC sprays that clips on her key ring. It could also clip to your fanny pack or maybe even your bike. They have a quick release so you can access it pretty quickly. The problem with pepper spray outside (like around Hefner) is the wind. You DO NOT want that stuff blowing back in your own face.

Pay a little more and get a better quality OC spray with a little more range (distance)

May I suggest a "dog pepper spray" like "halt" (that post man carries) zip tied to the handle bar stem for the errant hound or random BG.
For the extra special BG and M&P compact will fit nicely in the riding jersey with tire leavers, spare inter-tube and cell phone.

I knew a guy that would carry a full sized government model when he rode.

If she's really going to do the pepper spray thing, I recently learned that you can buy "trainer" spray canisters that just spray water. I think practicing deploying the canister and spraying someone would be a good idea.

I have no idea about pepper sprays but Fox Labs gets super duper reviews.

ben, when my wife was where yours is now she carreid (and still does) the kimber spray. its shaped like a pocket pistol and is supposed to shoot 13 feet and have 2 shots. then if she is willing get her to a firearms class. i'll even offer up my wife if she needs a 1st time shooting partner.

if my wife does a firearm class, it probably means aliens have reprogrammed her brain!!!!

i understand that. my wife had her ccw for a year before she actually carried an unloaded pistol in her purse. what worked for me was a trade. i had to start getting healthier and she would start packing. so we can both live long and happy lives together (btw she is doing much better at hers than i am with mine)

i know you dont want to hear it but you could trade her hitchhikers for some firearms training followed by her own ccw. she seems pretty motivated by the other. it would be a pretty fair trade.

Heartland has tasers, although I don't know what flavor. The main concern would be whatever she has being used against her. A knife would not be a good idea, spray could blow back like Burk said, and with her lack of desire for a firearm, a split second hesitation could be a disaster for her. A taser would have a higher chance of dropping the threat, but bad guy's recovery from the shock could be quite quick, and then what?

Might not be a bad idea to get her a whistle and start riding with her!

Perhaps a dummy gun painted black?

Or a H2H course and an edged weapon course

Not to be an ass, but please, never even consider using a dummy gun for anything other than training. A live weapon (or fake) should never be used to intimidate or influence any situation, it will only get you killed or locked up. The only time a gun needs to come out in a self defense situation is if somebody is going to die. You or a loved one are either going to be killed or you have to kill the bad guy to survive. No exceptions.
