Why no IDPA?

So I am kind of curious why there are not any IDPA matches held in the OKC area? Is it not very popular? I was interested in it mostly because it seemed the cheapest to get into, just use what you carry normally, and bam, you are ready to go! No having to spend 100 bucks on a belt and holster and another 100 on magazine holders, and another 200 on magazines. Just good ole practical fun. But then I see the nearest matches are at least 1.5-2 hours away, and that made me sad again...

I thought they were trying to get this going at okcgc.

What's the status on that?

I hear the new rules have caused some grumbling within the idpa circuit.

When I started competing, I just used the stuff sitting in my closet, including the gun. No need to get fancy.
I agree, but looking at some IDPA stages, looks like round counts and magazine counts are confined to something within a carry situation, unlike some other shooting sports I have watched where you need a bandoleer or chest rig with at least 6 magazines to run a stage without stopping, and since my carry gun only came with two mags, and I cant find them at stores usually, kind of makes it hard to play some of them. And while I don't mind borrowing equipment, it would get old quick borrowing someones stuff at each match for over a year and half while I saved up to by my own equipment.

You'll want 3 magazines total for IDPA. Not sure what kind of carry gun you have but magazines for most guns are $30 or less. You'll spend that in match fees and ammo at a match anyways.

That said, if you shoot a Glock 17 or M&P9 or something you can shoot Limited Minor in USPSA with 3 mags. There's a guy who posts on a few gun boards who shoots Limited with his 9mm carry gun, from concealment, and beats most people at locals because he's a boss.

If you think you need a full kit from CR Speed and 6 mags to shoot USPSA, but you don't think you need a $95 Armadillo Concealment vest to shoot IDPA, you have a few misconceptions about USPSA.

Jon, I have been shooting the H&H matches the last 2 months and even with my revolver I've never used more than 5 reloads per stage. That was only due to stages that you have to shoot 6, reload, shoot two, reload, shoot 6, etc. That stage was possible with two mags in your carry gun. The long stage Feegee set up only required 3 reloads and 8 shots per mag if you hit them all. You should come try it next month! I still suck at it, but it's the most fun I've ever had while being at the back of the pack. Haha.

Also, I only shot like 71 rounds, so it's ammo budget friendly as well.

The internet. It has magazines for you to purchase.
+1. Cheaperthandirt.com, midway, gunbroker, etc. Got my carbide die set from CTD for $26 something plus shipping. Way better than most local places if you could even find them in stock.

I can not get quote from post #4 to work (Some one will have to teach me how to post quotes from early posts)

Jonathan what is your carry gun that you only have 2 mags for?

I don't think you're gonna be happy with IDPA, you're not only gonna have to get an extra magazine or two for your pistol, but you are also gonna have to buy the required uniform. All of us operate on a tight budget, so we all make the most of our resources and apply them to where they will do the most good. Prices are prices and availability is what it is. If you really want to shoot, you can find a way to shoot, no matter what the sport. We all feel your pain in concern with having to spend money on a few things, but that is the nature of things. I, as well as many others here, hope you continue your quest to go from being just another gun owner to a competitive shooter out there mixing it up with the rest of us. If anything, come out to a match and watch. You will be able to see what everyone is using and make your own adjustments accordingly. Good luck!

Who are you? What have you done with our Micah?

I started seriousposting. It was only a matter of time until the rest followed.

So do you have to have the vest? I just thought as long as your shirt covers everything with your arms out you where good to go?
Not sure if this was a reply to my post or not, but my point was that you don't need a full race rig to shoot USPSA anymore than you need a "tactical" vest to shoot IDPA.

No one really knows. When you show up to shoot, the SO will tell you then if you are dressed appropriately.
