why don't more people compete?

all this talk about what sport is really thick skinned is... well stupid. Just because some other sports have "worse" people, it doesn't excuse the behavior of people in shooting sports. This argument is like me beating my wife with my fists and saying "the guy up the street beats his wife with a baseball bat, so you really need to toughen up".

look i have played basketball for decades and play in two leagues right now, but i have had some (not many) experiences that shock me with people in the shooting sports, and just because i can point out times that may be "worse" when i play bball doesn't' (nor should it) excuse the basic human respect that people should give each-other..
 
Some people suck. It happens. The proportion of people that suck in the action shooting sports is far lesser than average, and the proportion of people who are awesome is far greater.

I've never had an experience in the shooting area that made me question whether someone had basic human respect, but I've also got no problem telling people who don't want to play nice to go F themselves. People seem to respect that. Sometimes calling for a campfire song convention instead of telling someone to stop being a jackass just doesn't work that well.

Or maybe I'm thick skinned?

Actually, I wasn't talking about competitiveness or skill, I was trying to illustrate that a certain percentage of people are just jerks. But you're right, some people just aren't competitive either - I know, because I've been one of them for most of my life.
 
I was just thinking… I work with a captain in the national guard. He has plenty of cash, very good shooter, even teaches others, outgoing type-A personality, has his own farm where he practices regularly, I seriously doubt he has reservations about shooting in front of people having waxed dudes with his M4 in Afghanistan, invites me and his friends over for informal multi-gun shoots, and just otherwise doesn’t really fit anything mentioned in this thread… Yet, he seemingly has reservations about competing. Why do you think that is? Something is being missed.
 
For me personally I want to compete. The only problem I run into now is my work schedule. I work graveyard shift in a casino over the weekend. So the problem I have is I am either at work or asleep when matches are held. Now if someone could start holding matches Monday - Wednesday I would be set.

Pretty hard to match the excitement of combat I'm told. Maybe that's it??!

There is some truth in this.
Those that have hunted man, or dangerous game rarely go rabbit hunting.

Its different for each person.
