why don't more people compete?

I'm as guilty of this as anybody, we all need to pull a few new guys onto our squads & show 'em the ropes.
We'll do that at ProAm next month for sure. I let the squads go too lopsided last week. All the new guys were on Blaise and Bryon's squad.

Reasons I don't compete (yet)

1. Don't have speedloaders for my revolver.
2. Only holster for revolver is an IWB
3. Just purchased my XDm and need more practice with it.
4. Need more magazines for XDm. I read recommended was 5.
5. Ammo cost will only allow me to shoot every 2-3 months.

With that XDM you could shoot limited with two 19 round mags no problem. If you come to a USPSA match at OKC Gun Club I'll hook you up with 200 rounds for 30 bucks. New shooter discount.
That is an offer only a gentlemen would make!

Great example set, Jeff!!

I didn't shoot any competitive pistol or 3 gun until this past January and I turned 50 in August.

I agree that the cost of equipment and ammo can be a deterrent to many. I am fortunate to have a good paying career and I don't object to spending money in order to enjoy life. But this costs a helluva lot less than my previous addiction - bass fishing! I sold my boat and most of my gear and can buy ammo and pay for match fees for the next 3 years :)

We just had an RO class in OKC didn't we?
Half the class gets together on one squad, and some class attendees still haven't started running a timer. It's time to pop some cherries.

Well pretty much all the reasons have been covered but I still want to put my 2 cents in. After much harassment I finally attended my first pistol match almost 2 years ago. I was squadded up with Phil Strader and Mike Seeklander, intimidated ... Understatement! But they were both very helpful and supportive... I continued shooting pistol matches and a short time later met the Sanfords. They of course told me all about the 3 gun fun I was missing out on. The next weekend I went to the 3 gun match at USSA I watched the match with Jesses squad and met Tony Wall , Cory Couch, Jake Burki and several others . My sides hurt from the how much i was laughing. Fast forward 2 years and Im somewhere shooting almost every weekend, my wall of fame doesnt have any trophies just an extensive collection of gun oil and stickers from the big matches but I have alot of fun. Had it not been for those positive experiences early on Im not sure Id still be competing, So I just want to say thanks to all of you. And to everyone always remember we all had a first match so when theres a new shooter keep extending the hospitality that we all got when we started.
this story reminds me of how Jared & Feegee got together

Well Jeff that's an offer I can't turn down. I have a compact. Will I be okay with a 16 & 11 round mag? If not I can grab another 16. When is the next match? Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
OKCGC USPSA is the first Saturday of each month

That's why I like this type of stuff. People step up and help those that are to be competing against them.

Hell, I started moto-cross at 38 years old. First year in amature I was 1 point below the leader when I blew a set of rear brake pads. I only had to score 5th to win the series, but I was out with part problems.
The guy to beat gave me a set of pads to race. He won it but the gesture from a competitor was amazing.

Fast forward to two months ago, shooting a shotgun match, my new shotgun wasted the red dot on it, and Tony Wall, and Jake Burkie stepped in to offer their equipment and gear to finish the match.

This is what its all about.

If you want, I'll bring my 9mm XDm 5.25 with plenty of mags, triple crown holster, and a couple of the XDm mag carriers. It has the factory trigger.

All you need is a good sturdy belt. You are welcome to use it. We can squad up together and you can shoot my gun and Jeff's ammo!

Boom, that just happened

Time, Time, Time.

I love to shoot and i love to hang out but to attend a match I leave the house at 7:30 and don't get home unit after 4. all that time for 2 minutes of shooting. Granted that 2 minutes is a blast but it does make it hard to justify.

i love Jessie's idea! it would allow people with very little time to shoot and compete.

I have to admit that this is becoming an issue for me, too. Thats a lot of time for a little bit of shooting. Someone tell me how getting more people into shooting will help this.

LOL, I went the Bass fishing route in 82/83 on the Redman tour for a year. New boat, new vehicle, motels, gear, gas, tackle......the big money going out never ended.

I think promoting this sport, the sport we all love - shooting Idpa, steel challenge, uspsa and 3 gun has many benefits. New people entering the sport is what will keep it alive. Not only does it create better and safer shooters it builds a demographic of " normal" people that like to shoot and are not viewed as the bad guy that has alot of guns. I believe there would be a huge turn out for a 3 gun beginners match. Supply some glocks, cheap AR's and shottys and a easy stage or two. That might break down the fear and seeing the equipment needed. In Arkansas the gun shows are so packed it standing room only. I bet they would come if they knew about it and had a little help. I'm just saying...

Promotion helps. The sport is definitely growing after having a TV show and a magazine covering it regularly. However offering guns and gear to use isn't always enough. I had a complete extra setup of 3 gun gear just to let newbs use. It got used but there should have been a waiting list. The trick is we really need to latch onto new shooters and help them out. If you have a buddy to discuss things, learn with, and compete against its a lot more fun and less intimidating.
