Who knows Nagants?

Seeing the topic on the Nagant oil can it got me thinking about my Nagants. I have two; one a hex receiver 91/30 I believe is is called. The other is a carbine M44. The carbine functions fine but the big one doesn't fire consistently when held level. If I point it up in the air it works reliably (dry firing of course) but level the trigger doesn't release the bolt. If I put the bolt from the M44 in it the thing works fine. So I think it's something to do with the bolt but when I look at then I don't see anything different. Has anyone ever come across this with a Nagant?

It sounds to me that you need to disassemble the bolt for cleaning and inspection.

Check your sear and the piece on the cocking knob that corresponds with it. I had an old M91 Mosin that would "decock" itself upon closing the bolt, turned out the sear screw was so loose that the cocking knob wouldnt catch.

It sounds as if ramsey88 may be correct, so check that first.

there is an adjustment on the reassembly of the bolt. check out nagant website and try to find a bolt wrench. The firing pin is threaded and maybe the firing pin spring is not being compressed.

There are only seven parts to a Mosin bolt. It is easy to take down and inspect/adjust. Bring it by Simpsonville Gun and Pawn in Simpsonville on either a Tuesday,Thursday or Friday when I am there. I will look at it for you.
