I have a Savage 11vt with an EGW 1 piece base and I'll be using a Vortex Viper 6.5-20x50 scope.
What rings and height would those who know more about bolt guns than I recommend?

I don't want to spend a buttload of money though, so I'd say $80-$100 would be where I'm comfortable.

I've got a nice set of leupold rings

Leupold Mark 4, probably high. You may be able to get away with mediums but is check their site for exact measurements. The rings are steel, and USA made.

Edit: Leupold p/n 60669 for high, 61049 for medium

I used some of the Seekins rings on my 243 and I have been pretty happy with them so far, the vortex precision matched rings are pretty much the same as well.

We need to talk Mr Rigsby, for rings look no further than TPS damn good rings and won't break the bank, I'm guessing med height rings BUT depending on your rail height you may be able to pull of lows. I'd recommend getting the scope and rifle all lined out then perform the penny trick :) look up the scope ring video for 8541 tactical and you'll see where I'm going... pretty much stack pennies until you get the height for the scope to clear and you being able to see thru it then measure the stack add half the tube od then you'll know the rings you need.

The 243 I just finished I can go super low rings BUT the scope is too low when I get a cheek weld so went with low rings. Later,

I was hoping you would chime in Kirk.
I'll check out those rings and the penny trick. I'm guessing medium too.
I'll holler at you when I get everything together so I can feed you beer to assemble :D

Come on over anytime! might get together and chat so you don't get stuff you don't need and it's better to spend once than to dump your pennies at stuff that's crap. Javier just finished his first savage build and it turned out rather well and if you don't have the scope yet while the viper is a good scope I'd point you toward the HS-T or PST unless your just gonna shoot cans or paper at 100. It's just for a fun range toy for 100-200 yards with the occasional 300 yard so I can practice more with grouping, trigger control and breathing.
I already have the scope in the safe so that's what I'll be using.

I'm not big on the "tactical" huge rings with the large knobs on em, so I ended up ordering a set of Warne medium rings.

Nothing wrong with Warne rings! I'm still running a pair I got off GT before I shot with him lol it was a minute or two ago. For me the tactical rings ain't for looks they just hold up but I'll say the TPS rings are smaller than most.

Well sounds like you've got a plan, the med rings should work fine but you may have to add something to the stock so you can get a cheek weld but that's no biggie. What caliber? Later,

Kirk

.223 I figured inside of 300 yards it wouldn't hold me back at all.
I had a Remington 700 in .223 that was awesome for this. Lots of options with ammo to figure out what worked the best. Light recoil and very accurate. It should be a lot of fun...

Did you ever get some rings lined out? I have some TPS lows that I'd be willing to give up if you wanted to try them. My Surgeon had them with a Viper PST 4-16x50, then I stepped up to a Schmidt and Bender and had to change rings too!

I like Warne rings. I have them on a Savage 10 in 308 with a Vortex Viper PST 6-24X50 FFP. They work great and I've never had to adjust them. Didn't even use loctite and when I went to check the torque, they were still tight.
