Which non-resident CCW to get

Looking at Utah and Florida.

So far, they seem to provide the same state coverages. Important for me is Georgia, Florida, and Delaware. Maryland too, but that's a different rant.

From reading the applications, it looks like FL will take my SC training class certificate. Cost is about $115.

Utah I can't tell if my SC training cert will work or if I'd need to do a UT class. Cost on UT website is $50ish.

Pros/cons of either? Thoughts?

I'll never (well, probably) actually go to Utah again so carrying there (and therefore knowing their laws in detail) isn't terribly important to me. FL on the other hand we visit pretty often; I have a copy of their laws already.

A copy of your SC CWP is proof of training for Florida. You'll need to get your fingerprints done at a police station though. For Utah you will need to take a Utah Class, the costs runs about $100. The $50 (actually I think it is $60) is for Utah to process your application. Forget Maryland, you'll never get carry privileges there. Check into a New Hampshire nonresident permit on their state website. Fill out a short form, include a copy of your SC CWP and a check for $100. I got mine in 9 days. It's good for 4 years and it covers Georgia.

I think the image problem is related to NoScript on my end.

Different question - where can I get the fingerprint card done?
 
I've had mine done at the county sheriff's office in Moncks Corner for my C&R. That is if your sheriff dept.is doing its job. I understand some offices discourage the use of their office for that service. My Daughter had one done at the post office for an Alaskan Teaching application. The PO's that process passport applications have electronic finger-printers.

P.S. I got a Penn. State CWP, before you had to apply in person, which gives me Georgia and several other states I'll probably never visit. I think I can go all the way to the pacific ocean but I haven't looked lately so I can't swear to it.

I see what you mean. You can go to the site and build your own map. The Utah CWP (and I'm working from memory now) will give you Georgia, Alabama, and a few other states.
 
One consideration might be the Federal Gun Free Zones Act.

It is a felony for you to approach within a school zone (1000' IIRC) without a permit issued by that state, unless the gun is cased and locked (or under a few other considerations). There is no exemption for driving on a major road within the school zone. The ATF does not honor reciprocity for purposes of the federal statute.

I have not heard of anyone charged with carrying a sidearm in a school zone in America as a standalone crime but it is a possible add on. If you leave America and go somewhere like Cali then you could run afoul of more vigorously enforced state Gun Free Zone laws, but neither Utah nor FL will be honored outside of America anyways.

So, if you go to FL often... You might prefer a FL permit to avoid any federal entanglements.
 
Kinda what I was thinking.

While I have friends on the wrong coast, and have been many times, almost everything I do for fun is illegal there so I really doubt I'll ever move. :)

While I'd be happy to leave the South for say, a solidly six-figure or more salary as a government lawyer... to move to California or one of the New England communocracies the pay would have to be in the seven-figure range. And honestly, I'd be planning the getaway from the moment I took oath.
 
I just looked it up. I need Utah to get to the Pacific Ocean. :oops: It will be a while before I have to worry about that.

Remember that once you get outside SC, Open Carry without a permit is generally legal. Especially west of the Mississippi, so long as you stay in America. So even if your CCW permission slip isn't honored you may have some open or car carry options.
 
I just took my CWP class and tests on saturday with Dale Cox at Trader World in N.Charleston and for an extra $35 he gave us all the Utah stuff too. Now all I need to do is send my packet with $51 (yes.. $51.. not $50 or $55, but $51) to Utah and I'm set. He said he does the Utah stuff separately at his office but its $50 to take it there. He's a really cool guy and our 8 hours flew. If you're looking to get Utah I'd strongly recommend him
 
I put this together for my own reference, most of the ones I found online are either out of date or just plain wrong. If I made any mistakes, please let me know, but I thought I'd share.


Note: this is (the the best of my knowledge) accurate, but only if you hold a SC resident CWP. As I'm sure you know, some states don't recognize non-resident permits. I also didn't bother with Alaska and Hawaii. Everyone can carry in Alaska and nobody can carry in Hawaii

Sorry MeganRowe, but your map is out of date and incorrect for S.C. The S.C. CWP is recognized in Montana, Idaho, Utah, South Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Indiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Anyone can carry in Vermont. That's 30 states in all. Check USACarry.com.
 
Well my PA non-resident expires and PA now requires FTF.

I am only looking at CC legally in GA, SC CWP covers the other states I travel (exception CA).

Is there another less expensive option such as as PA, $24 for 5 years via mail or online?
I wouldn't mind a FTF at a nearby state.
