I'd like some better irons... I feel like I just can't acquire a fast sight picture no matter how much I practice with my current sights (folding BUIS, Troy I think).

These would get used in competition but I'd like them to be capable for a battle rifle too, if possible.

Any recommendations?

Thanks,
Sam

I have the flip up Troy sights and I love them. I've had them on both of my rifles. Other than that, I can't recommend you anything else. Sorry.

Daniel defense front and carry handle for a rear. Or daniel defense for both. Or LMT for both. Or troy fixed sights for both. Or Troy folding sights for both. I don't see why the Troy folding sights wouldn't be good for a 'battle rifle' (?).

I had Troy's on my RRA rifle and I have them on my LMT Defender rifle. I love them!

I have a extra set of the plastic magpul flip up sights you can try out if you want they are just sitting in my safe. There not the best but worth trying out

You would want an elevation wheel. I'd say the DPMS or LMT fixed rear.

FSB front, or clamp on JP FSB/gas block

I'm unable to find fault with the Armalite clamp on front site. The DPMS removable rear is a quality part too. A nice set of irons for around 100 bucks.

JP clamp on front and either a DPMS or LMT (what I'm running) on the rear, turn the front post down to .035" :-) this seems to work ok.

What barrel length are you shooting as sight radius with irons is where it's at. Later,

They are great for that role, they seem nearly indestructible. I just have a hard time acquiring the sight picture fast with them and I haven't tried much else. So I'm wondering what other people are running and if those products can perform a dual "competition/fighting" rifle role.

I started with an 18" but I'm moving to a 20" barrel and placing the front sight out by the comp to get lot of real estate between the front and rear sights. Just for giggles try this, throw your rifle up like your going to shoot but don't pay any attention to the rear sight just look for the front post, funny thing about the peep sights is that your eye for some reason centers itself.

I know the stock front sight is WAY too thick for hitting anything but maybe a 55 gallon drum! Mr. Miller hooked me up with a .035" ( I think) front post and oh boy makes a hell of a difference. Try that little trick with ignoring the rear sight and see if it works, some folks it does others things don't work out for. Later,

Kirk

I was using YHM BUIS last year, and they were great sights, and still are. It's tougher to get used to the iron-sight sight-picture than the optical-sight sight-picture. It took a lot of pointing the gun around the house to get used to binocular sighting a rifle with iron sights, but it wasn't like I had to do it eight hours a day for weeks on end. I'd say look into different front sight posts. I changed to a KNS post from a set I got from Midway, and it improved my long-range shooting to the point were it was very comparable to optics.

If I run those off set sights with my tac scope will it put me in open class?

No. Tac optics allows only one "optical" sight. Iron sights are not considered "optical". A scope and offset irons is ok at most matches. Since most 3 gun matches are outlaw, you will need to check the match rules to not get bumped to open.

Open guys usually have a scope and offset red dot on their rifles.

$240 for iron sights..... F that! Need options for cheap ass's!

The cheapest offset sight I've seen is the JP short range off set. It's half the dueck sight, but it has a very short sight radius. I'm considering putting one on my JP-15, but I need to learn to shoot my rifle before I start adding a bunch of distractions.
