they're not necessary, but they do help tighten up the fit between the upper & lower receivers.
They won't improve your accuracy but I like to run them in my rifles anyway just to eliminate any rattling of the receivers.
 
The one that's been in my rifle for a couple years hasn't deteriorated any.
 
As your rifle wears it will get a little sloppy. It can tighten up that wobble? It doesn't help anything but that nuisance.
 
I had one in my 3-gun rifle. I had to trim it down so far to make it fit that it was like a piece of paper. It fell out sometime. I don't know when and I never noticed it after that
 
It's a used foam ear plug somebody paid shipping and handling on....

I like an AR that rattles a little bit... And mine rings steel ( and coyotes) well enough with or without the foam plug or a accu wedge

Only if you want to silently injun up on the targets.

some uppers & lower combinations have more wobble. If there is wobble I like the wedge mainly when I am shooting for accuracy or to sight in. Previous rifle had wobble i was happy with the wedge current rifle fits together tightly no need for wedge.
