I have thought about joining a few times but I don't really every hear about anything they do. Not do I hear a lot about them from other shooters.

As long as they keep "their guns" they really don't care if you keep yours. The ORA was not hot to trot when the SDA rolled out... And probably won't back laws that give Oklahomans full rights like New Hampshire, Alaska and Arizona never lost in the first place.
From what I've read in the news letter, I am glad the ORA keeps a low profile they look out for me even less than the NRA does.
At least the NRA wins in court now and then... Even though the technicalities they have won may create some long term issues at least they chip away at the issues.

From what I have been told they support gun rights for hunting and competition but they draw the line, and fight against, at any kind of guns for self defense rights. I already pay dues to one shady gun rights group. I'm not going to join another one

If you want to join a great gun rights organization, join the 2nd Amendment Foundation. They are the ones that brought Mcdonald, Hellar, Ezell. They always have dozens of cases going on. Although I'm not crazy about the NRA, I join. I think of the NRA as fighting what pops up under the executive, and legislative branches, and the SAF as fighting through the judicial branch.

When I see Oklahoma "Rifle" Association, I think of hunting rifles, which Dennishoddy said in another thread they did a lot goof for hunting and guns in general. I may be off, but this kind of group doesn't sound like the kind of group that will stand with me when the feds come for my type of guns as long as theirs aren't be taken at that time, and their stance on the open carry kind of supports my theory.

Ok, here is my issue with the ORA. When it came to the open carry issue, the first thing that legislatures want to do is try to figure out how to legislate the issue, and how to make some revenue for the state from the new legislation.
Some of these guys in the ORA have been there since their inception, and have inbreeded with the legislators. They have become part of the process.
The legislature wanted to charge fees to open carry, and require training, blah, blah.
If I haven't read it wrong, and I've read it thousands of times......does the 2nd
Ammendment to the Constitution of the United States require any training or fees?
I do know one of the top guys of the ORA runs a training facility here in Ok. I don't think I would be out of line in thinking that person could see some dollar signs in his program if the Ok legislature required training before paying the state to get an open carry. Similar to the situation we have now with concealed carry. The training part is going through the book of laws word for word, shooting at the range at 3 and 7 yards, and paying fees. You don't even have to hit the target to qualify. Just exibit range safety. How stupid is this?
The stuipidity is requiring somebody to pay to exercise a right guarenteed by the Constitution.
If the 1st ammendment was regulated like the 2nd, all of the libs would go bezerk.

Shoot-N-Iron out in Shawnee. Mr Abel is getting on a bit...back in the day he WAS the LEO and pistol craft guy in this part of the world.
I have read that a majority of ORA members backed the last OC bill...but the Executive Board of ORA wrote the letter against it on their own. ORA's leadership is stuck in the 50's. WE live in a dangerous world... not one where Cops run after escaped Jimmy Cagney wannbes after a prison break or someting.
IN my opinion, folks in Paul's generation are in denial about how tough the world is today. Those old boys had some bad cats to deal with- but there are more of them today than ever before.

Mr Abel is a tough bad man if he needs to be. No doubt about it. His generation was taught by men like Col Charles Askins, Bill Jordan, Jelly Bryce. Times were different then. A SWAT team was Jelly Bryce walking into the bedroom you holed up in... and shooting you dead if you blinked. Jordan and his Border Patrol Officers were under fire (and fireing back with great effect) on a regular basis... and Askins? He was just a bad man working for the right side.
Askins and Bryce ....and a few other Rangers and Border area officers were drafted early on by the FBI. The lawyers and accountants at the FBI did not carry guns at first...when they finally were armed on an official basis.... few had ever dealt with a felon- much less one that would shoot back.
Askins, Bryce and the others had... and continued to do so.
The times were simpler. Break the law and expect a bad tiime. End of story.

Who all remembers Dan Combs? Paul Abel was good friends with him and they both did shooting exhibitions, Paul in Dan Combs' place sometimes.
And yes, I've been through his class and I wouldn't think of messing with him even at his age. He's one of those that can kill you with his hands, gun, knife or any combination of the same. And he can have it done before you even know you are in trouble.
