I did my first 3-gun yesterday. Well run, and I had a great time! Everyone was nice, helpfull, and respectfull. I think Im hooked. Had a few snafu's( didnt seat my mags very well at first, battery cap and battery flew off my sight), but overall went great. And while I enjoyed myself, I think I want to use a different rifle. I was using a FNFAL in .308, and while fun, want something a little lighter and handier. Now, I know that everyone is giong to say " M-4 type, 16-18in barrel, collapseable stock, Holo/red dot/ trijicon site, forward grip, insert name of high end maker here". While these are great rifles, I would like to use something different ( thus my use of the FAL). Why you ask? Because I want too. I have been looking at a couple of different rifles, and wanted ya'll opions.Im looking at the Steyer AUG3, Galil, Sig 556, HK 91. I like the AUG for it being a bull pup, and yes I understand that they have their own specific mag and the trigger pull's on a Bullpup arent as crisp/precise/light as on a regular rifle. The Galil cause its different and has a 35 round mag, and is the best features of the FAL,AR,and AK. SIG is, well, SIG. And the HK 91 is a great roller locker design. What are your thoughts? Any other rifles/carbines you can think of? And no, I cant afford an ACR or SCAR. The Steyer is at the high end of the price range (about 1500),the SIG is about 12, the galil (century arms) is 599, ant the HK knock-off about the same. What say's the 3-gun guru's on this subject. Thanks in adance for the advice.

The giant question I would ask..."can I get parts and support for this gun?" AR's are "availible" ...parts, repairs, are
easy to obtain.

I think I saw a mini 14 or an actual m14 - I was drooling! I really enjoyed using my AK and Jesse even made a positive comment about it being light - he may have even said "Wow it's really light, I like this" or something like that. I'm like you man - I want something different, I would like to try an ak-74 in 5.45 once to see if I like it better. I'd love to see what you decide!

Im glad you made it out! That was a fun match despite the winds best attempts at ruining it.

Jeff's comments are the primary reason everyone runs AR's. The "3 gun guys" arent going to recommend much other than the AR because they run, parts are everywhere, everyone can work on them, and they are fast.

I would look for reliability first and different second. I had three malfunctions yesterday. One was dirt in my pistol from the wind, and the other two point to a rifle magazine. Those three malfunctions really get in your head. When you have to clear a malf on the clock your internal timer gies into over drive and you typically speed up and crash the stage trying to make up the time you lost on the malf clearance.

I've got a Sig 556 swat patrol that I plan on 3 gunning with later on this summer when my schedule allows it. I like it alot, it has run flawlessly and is as accurate as you can ask for from a high production, off the shelf, civilian battle rifle with a $130 1x red dot on it.

My buddy just got one of the Century C93's. (The roller bolt HK clone) It seems nice, ran perfectly when we took it to the range for the first time on monday. But I hear its a luck of the draw if you get a good one or a crappy one?

The only draw backs I can see with my Sig is that it is slightly heavier than a competition AR. The recoil is slightly greater, due to the shortened piston driven gas system. And its got me behind the sights. It'll be fine for my casual competition needs, I'm proud to have it in my closet, it shoots good at the range and it gets just as many curious on-lookers at the range as my pre-ban AK. It also field strips rediculously easily and runs very clean. What more can you ask for?

P.S. I got my Sig because I liked the looks, heard mostly good things and wanted to be different. I figured the price was a wash because I would have to spend just as much or more to make an AR like I wanted it. Taymoor showed me that MGI Hydra and the only thing that depresses me about it is that I had been talking about that to him a few days prior, brainstormed a very similar setup and then found it already existed!

PM me if your ever going to be around Stillwater on a sunday or monday and I'll let you run a few rounds through my Sig. Or just let me know if you'll be at the next heartland outdoors full auto shoot and I'll bring it up to that.

Mag changes on the AUG will be slow, the Galil will be great, the HK91 will cause brass to have a very short life if you reload and is VERY hit or miss from Century, and the Sig will be great. Para Ordnance makes a better piston-driven AR than any other that I've shot, by far. You should keep that FAL, whatever your choice. The FAL is the greatest implement of battle ever devised, to paraphrase Patton.

I chose to run with an AR because I'll be interested in winning after a few or several more competitions.

when my wife's and my schedule allows me to finally make a match, i will be using my FS2000. i hope it does well. i don't have any other rifle, but i also like the idea of using different stuff. it is light, has very little recoil, is accurate and is amazingly balanced. a SCAR 16 is on my buy list also when i get the cash together. i would rather have that than an AR.

You've got the wrong rifle. The FAL wasn't adopted or even prototyped before Patton had an unfortunate jeep accident.
