"If it's going to deal with crime, I'm all for it," said Vincent Fracassi, who says he is not a gun owner.

What a moron. Sure its a great idea if he doesn't have to pay it. Once again, lets punish the law abiding people for the action of those who do not abide by the law.

Here's my thought. If someone shoots you while they are committing a crime, they have a kidney, eye, and lung removed and "sold" to the state as compensation for their activity and to pay the medical bills of the persons who were injured. I guarantee that they will never do it more than twice in a lifetime, and it will help offset medical costs. Sure, it will never happen, but it is one way to punish the guilty and not the innocent.

"If we can tax cigarettes, it seems we can tax bullets and guns," said Chicago resident Cathryn Taylor. "But at the same time, I get the point that if people are buying the stuff illegally, then the tax doesn't matter because they aren't going through legal channels anyway."

Hark! You don't say...

...an ammunition tax isn't the only potential money maker on the table. The board president reportedly wants to lease the top two floors of the County Building in Chicago's Loop for what she estimates could net at least $1 million a year for 10 years.

Call me crazy, but could it be that this plan is not aimed at stopping violence, but merely at controlling revenue generating LACs?...Naaaaaaah. Our government would never!

"Preckwinkle said acute care for the average shooting victim cost taxpayers $52,000 because nearly 70 percent of the victims don't have health insurance."

Hmm, I wonder why that is? Maybe it's because the majority of the shootings are gang related? You don't see many gang members being offered HMO plans when they join up. Coupled with it happening mostly in the poorer sections of Chicago and its outlying countys, it comes to no surprise that the victims usually have no insurance.

Once again, taxpayers and law biding citizens suffering through colonoscopies searching for more of their money.

Why not just tax illegal gang activity?

It was tried years ago. Drug dealers could buy stamps for there "product" so if caught they wouldst get tax evasion to. Well its all about mail order ammo or driving to another state for the ill. people.

Those planning this tax know darn well that it won't affect the gangs. They gangs don't buy their ammo legally. But they just want to harm law-abiding gun owners. The Chicago Dems are still upset about losing McDonald.

most politicians don't seem to comprehend that a tax is only supposed to fund the government's obligations and a specific tax, a gasoline tax, for example, is only supposed to pay for what the government provides to gasoline users like roads, traffic signals, etc.

Taxes imposed on a group small enough they can't defend themselves against it, say a tax on tobacco, is illegal governmental extortion.

only tobacco users pay the tax adn the money from the tobacco tax is supposed to only go to pay the government's obligations for services provided to tobacco users.

Punitive taxes that attempt to control citizen behavior is completely unconstitutional and disgusting any politician who endorses it needs to be called on it every time they stick their head up.

Hoe'bama's attack on the second ammendment has brought legions of citizens into a new awareness forcing then to think. The ranks of 2A voters have increased to a point it will be even harder to remove the second ammendment. Rest assured they'll try, but we all know they're only blowing smoke up the butts of their voter base who think taking firearms from law abiding citizens will reduce crime and eventually create a eutopian civilization where there is no violence.

I try every time I talk to an anti-gun person to not challenge their position, but rather to "add to" the conversation that we also need to keep people from becoming the kind of person who'll commit a crime with a gun. We need to demand our schools prepare children to suceed on their own and not rely on welfare. If I do it right they'll never even realize I'm pointing out all the flaws their socialist politicians are feeding them. It's actually quite funny. They'll listen to anything that doesn't challenge them.
I hope the seed I plant will take root and they'll begin to share the facts with other's in their social(ist) group.

The sad truth is our government is actually losing ground against crime by using sensational arguments that motivate voters instead of actually work to stop making criminals. No politician alive will stay in the room for that discussion.

CHICAGO, Nov 2 (Reuters) - The county that includes Chicago approved a tax on firearms on Friday to help pay healthcare costs from gun violence, making it what is believed to be the first major U.S. metropolitan area to enact such a levy as a form of gun control.

The Cook County Board of Commissioners voted 9-7 to impose a $25 tax on each firearm sold. The tax is expected to raise $600,000 in revenue in 2013.

Yeah, right...

too bad the criminals don't pay the violence taxes when they get their illegal firearms. Should make them pay DEARLY if caught though. In fact, they should pay for the victims medical care entirely, even if aquitted!
