Hello,

I am a little confused reading some 3gun rules and then reading threads about people using the same gun they shoot in limited.

Some 3gun rules state that for tatical class the handgun must be in factory configuration. Not many limited guns stay in their factory configuration.

Mine has had a mag well added, tri-tipped slide, sights replaced, etc.

Are these mods allowed or do I need to look for another gun (hope not).

Thanks,

Steve

I've rarely seen a "production" type gun at a 3gun match.
When I have, it was a newbie that didn't own a "limited" gun (yet).

The only time I have seen restrictions on handguns is if you plan to shoot heavy metal or heavy metal optics. Other than that, any limited or production gun works just fine. Open is still open.

I'm not sure where you got that verbiage but typical rules state that the gun must be a factory gun. i.e. a gun in current production not some one off be all end all wild and crazy blaster that your gunsmith dreamed up one Sunday afternoon in a drunken stopper after The Bears lost again.

2013 Bushmaster Tarheel 3-Gun Rules

1.2. Handgun â€" Tactical Class (Optic, Iron and Non Magnified)
2.1. Firearms must be of a factory configuration.
3.2. Internal modifications are allowed providing they do not alter the original factory configuration of the handgun.

IMGA rules

6.2 Handgun - Tactical Class
6.2.1 Firearms must be of a factory configuration.
6.2.2 Internal modifications are allowed providing they do not alter the original factory configuration of
the handgun.

You will notice in the third point on each the sepcifically mention in mods are allowed but nothing else may be modified from original configuration...

This is how most pistol rules read. That wording in the Tarheel rules sounds like the USPSA production division pistol rules. I would contact Charles Sole the MD for a clarification. Guessing they either copied and pasted from the wrong Rule book or they truly want you to use USPSA production division style guns. I know their shotgun mag capacity is limited at 8 at anytime which suggests they ate trying to keep things "stock" kinda sorta.

Superstition Mountsim Mystery 3 Gun pistol rules...

5.4 Tactical Limited division
5.4.1 Firearms must be of a factory configuration. Prototype firearms are specifically prohibited. Internal modifications are permitted providing they do not alter the external appearance of the firearm.
5.4.2 Handgun
5.4.2.1 Handgun holsters must be a practical/tactical carry style and must safely retain the handgun during vigorous movement. Semiautomatic pistol holsters must completely cover the trigger. Revolver holsters must completely cover the trigger and the cylinder. The belt upon which the handgun holster is attached must be worn at waist level. Shoulder holsters and cross draw holsters are prohibited.
5.4.2.2 Electronic sights, optical sights, extended sights, compensators, muzzle brakes or barrel porting are prohibited.
5.4.2.3 Magazines length may not exceed 170mm in the case of single column magazines, and may not exceed 140mm in the case of staggered column magazines.

This is what concerns me when my limited gun has external modifications over stock (sights, tri-top, mag well, undercut trigger guard, etc.)

Again, it looks like limited guns wouldn't be allowed. (at least to a first timer shooting)

Not that any of this is going to matter this year as I have a lot to learn to become competitive but ultimately I need to make sure my equipment I practice with will ultimately be allowed at the bigger matches.

It means you can't shoot a prototype. You can cut up a 2011 or Glock all you want and it doesn't really change the configuration of the gun.

Get it to accept 3 more magazines or something and its a different story. But if you're in doubt contact the MD, they will give you clarification.

Hmmm that is strange. Making an INTERNAL modification that ALTERS the EXTERNAL appearance? How does that work?
