Only one building on the entire base was not catastrophically damaged, I believe that was the gym. UAVs in the hangar were damaged beyond repair. This storm was stronger than the one that wiped out Homestead AFB south of Miami
Man ... this is hard to believe. It was a beautiful base. I suspect there were a few jets that could not be hur-evac'd due to maintenance issues and subsequently got damaged -- perhaps beyond repair. I suspect they will re-build the installation though. The base offers many benefits from a training perspective -- lots of open water to the south for unlimited maneuvering without having to worry about airspace restrictions. There are strategic benefits to the location as well.
Here's to hoping they rebuild bigger and better -- keep 'em flying!
