Thunderbird Run 'n Gun, July 13, 2013 - do you have what it takes?

I will be there tomorrow who else from here is going to make it
It may turn into a shoot & walk a thon as hot as it is lol

If I was an EMT or a medical examiner it would be my job to attend. Someone post a video , not a gruesome one though.

It was pretty hot out.. tough run.. stages out to 400.. my start time was 11:07 (lucky).. first guy went off at 9:15.. last guy i think start time was @ 2:30

Can't remember his name, but he captured fastest shoot times, fastest run time, and overall first place. His pure run time was only 38 minutes...and he did it without carrying any water.

More importantly, who got carted off with heat exhaustion in this heat?
Nobody that I know of. One guy self-eliminated at stage 2 or 3...after literally leaving it all on the course. But no shame, he showed up and gave it a whirl...

My start time was 1400. Man that sun was high in the sky! At the last minute I threw an extra bottle of water in a cargo pocket and I'm glad I did. When I left Stage 3 I had a river of sweat running out of my shirt at the bottom of my chest rig. When I got to Stage 4 my pants looked like my Depends had sprung a leak.

They advertised 2 miles, but I believe it was much longer...

Finding the trails, picking through the woods, briars, in and out of ditches/gulleys and under/over barbed wire, carrying/wearing gear, 38 minutes is smokin'....IMHO.

38 minutes is hauling the mail. That guy was good.

Lots of fun and the most challenging thing I can remember doing.

Thanks to everybody who came out and ran/shot with us. It was a great event, especially for something none of us have ever done before! We got most of the bugs worked out on the RO run on Friday, so things went very smoothly on Saturday. Attitudes were great all around, and I was very impressed with the level of performance I saw. It is impressive enough just to be able to complete a course like this on a 105 degree day, but to do it while maintaining the shooting skill I saw demonstrated by so many of you is just that much more so. I was relieved to see that we did not have to call on any of the considerable medical expertise that was present.

The winner was Justin Cocheran. He had both the best run score and the best shoot score. He was top shooter on 3 of the 5 stations.

Chris, you took 5th place. Way to go man. We gave out trophies to the top 6 finishers. I have yours... I can mail it to you if you want.

The scores are being posted on our website by our web host, Brian Altenhofel. He is a great guy who gave us server space for free, and helped out setting the site up. Thanks Brian! Thanks also to all of the ROs. Most of all, thanks to Ken for hosting this event. I am looking forward to organizing the next one.

One of my ROs, Dale Spencer, is actually organizing a run n gun of his own. It is posted on his website here: http://www.alexarms.com/

I was going to run the course with my AR, but I had just installed a new free float handguard, and didn't get a chance to zero before the RO run. I grabbed my M1 instead, with a few bandoliers of .30-06. Here I am before my run:

Thanks! I thought it went exceedingly well for a first-time event. I'd say this is mainly due to having so much skilled help. The ROs we got for this event were top shelf.

I just e-mailed the scores to all attendees. They should also be posted shortly on the website.

Guys, this match was a blast! I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to work as an RO with as skilled and nice a group of people as I could have hoped for (might have something to do with the fact that most of the ROs were Appleseeders :) ). The competitors were excellent and did a great job of being mindful of safety in such a dynamic format. We had folks running the course in everything from running shorts and tennies, to a full combat loadout complete with helmet. Talk about full-spectrum participation.

If you didn't shoot this match but own a serviceable rifle & pistol, and possess a functional means of getting from one place to another over unkind terrain, I'm calling you out: You need to shoot the next one of these matches. This was Grade A, clothes-on fun.

I believe that there is a milsurp run n gun in the works for January. Daniel would provide better details as they come available than I can.

As stated in Daniel's post, there is a zombie run n gun scheduled for October (some reports are indicating that the run n gun format may not happen, but the shoot will be.)

The Pecos Run N Gun will be held later this year in Texas and is about 6 miles long.

Again, they're always looking for places to host these. If you own, or know someone who owns, a lot of land (contiguous land) where we can do one of these, let Daniel know. He'll do the rest.
