Thumb rests

I've been thinking about a thumb rest since they were approved for limited division this year. There are offerings from several different companies. I've never shot a pistol with one and haven't seen many at local matches. Do any of you have experience with them?

I don't see them very often even on open guns of course I'm not looking too hard either. I'd be more interested in a slide racker.

I've seen a couple of thumb rests on some older 1911's. The claim is that it helps with muzzle rise.
