My 3-Gun AR started off with a 100% Del-Ton complete upper. Super cheap, and I mean suuuuuupeeerrr cheap. It has about 3000 rounds on it, maybe more, with zero issues. The upper receiver is still on there, as well as the charging handle, forward assist and dust cover assembly. Oh, and the Del-Ton BCG is still in there.
The carbine I put together in the fall was 100% cheapest parts available. AO Precision upper (which I bought after UPS lost my PSA upper) and BCG. Del-Ton barrel from the upgrade of my 3-Gun AR. Model 1 free-float tube ($35 with barrel nut!!!!!). Heck, the Aimpoint I put on it is worth slightly less than the gun itself. It only has about 200 rounds down the pipe, so it's still brand new, but it shoots like a laser, and is fault-free so far. I might send it to Accurate Iron to have the roll marks filled in with robin's-egg-blue watercolor paint. But I won't pay more than $3.50. This gun is cheap!

I shot 3 gun for a year with a bone stock PSA M4 with iron sights before moving up to anything better. Anything you have that will send lead downrange is more than good enough for a decent club match. A good shooter can take any gun and make it run better than I can just like a bad shooter won't be able to make an 8" group at 2 yards with the most expensive rifle on the block.
Makes me think of a story I heard years ago about Ted Nugent touring with Van Halen back in the day. Ted was a believer before he met Eddie Van Halen that most of VH's sound was effects and the way his guitar was setup and that anyone could sound like VH if they played his rig. While touring with them Ted asked Eddie if he could play his guitar one day during sound check and when he did he was blown away because it sounded like Nugent and not like Eddie. And when Eddie played through Ted's rig it sounded like Eddie. Ted realized right there that the tone was in the player, not the guitar.
