This has got to be a joke....

"No good decision was ever made in a swivel chair" - Patton

"Always listen to the men on the ground" - Pete Blaber

I would love to hear an explanation of the reason behind this decision.

I'd consider this mostly as a by product of the wind down. When troops come back to garrison duty- expect a lot of things to go back to the "by the book" way of doing things.

Pmags, private purchase holsters, 1911 pistols and M14 Based rifles -and some of this stuff has been special purchase will be the first to go.

I'm too far removed from the military to give a reason why they did that, but will say that a Co-workers son spent a year in the sand box as a SAW Operator. He was having major problems with his issued mags having feeding problems. Buddy bought a ton of GI mags from Brownells and sent them to him. Problems were over.
I've heard that the Pmags won't work in a SAW system, so that may be the reason?
When I was in, everybody had the same equipment, same mags, same everything. Battlefield pickup was the reason. Get in a firefight, have a major malfunction, pick up one that a guy couldn't use anymore, and go back to work. Everybody was required to use the same sight picture, etc for that reason.

I'd bet money that a solider somewhere that was using his own mag ran into problems and got injured or killed and the government is trying to cover their asses by making sure everyone is using the government approved equipment. Liability issues and lawyers rule the world.

Soldiers can't sue the government or their respective services.

That's interesting ... I'd still put money on someone getting hurt or had some issue due to an unofficial mag and the army is just trying to make sure everyone is on "their" equipment so failure rates, etc are known.

The Army is trying to get back to basics. Things like discipline and PT and Wt Control, Appearance in and out of uniform which it let slip for 10+ yrs. This just might be a step in trying to get everything back to "by the Book". Though I really don't know.

common sense? all it takes in one Command Sargent Major who's brown up to his ears to toss that common sense right out the window.

Some folks don't know how much authority and respect a Command Sargent Major has.

When coming back from the SE Asia Tour in the early 70's, I was advised by a 1st Sargent to send a letter to the Command Sargent Major of the Army in the Pentagon about my next deployment. The letter had to be properly written, properly folded, and the envelope properly addressed. Worked.
I got the dream assignment at Ft Leavenworth KS.

LOL...that could have gone either way. Most CSM would think "their" dream assignment for you would be TDY with the Airforce in Minot ND...just for a few months- Dec to April. LOL. That would learn ya about the letter writin'

Your experience may have differed from mine , but I was in the US ARMY at Junction City (Ft Riley) and I used to transport prisoner to USDB at Ft. Leavenworth. I never found any Kansas post to be a dream assignment . In fact when they said I was going to Germany I did hand springs.

I have a USAF buddy who volunteered for Guam when he found out they were going to extend him at Minot...You can only survive betting on who's feet will frostbite first so long before you go insane

For the record--- never served on active status. But I did work for contractors... once the Military decides on something... the dumber it is the faster it happens
