Thinking About 3 Gun

I started with the bare essentials. Been only doing it for a little over a year but every month I'll add something to the pile. By going to the matches you'll get a feel for what you want to use from the other people there. I've seen many people start with a shell pouch to load from. Point is to get out there and start having fun.

How important are magnified optics in the 3-gun club-match world? Are they a must-have, or can one get by with something like an aimpoint or eotech? I'm also interested in getting started, but don't have any low power variables - just dots.

I just shoot iron sights....... the targets are not all that small so I'd say go with a dot sight there are lots of guys shooting the EoTech and such. Either way just practice with what you have cause no matter how much cool stuff you have if you can't hit anything then what's the point :) shoot what you have and figure it out as you go! I built another rifle from most of the stuff I changed out on my first rifle I thought would be the tits for 3G. Later,

Kirk

Eotech is an awesome sight for 3 gun, i used to run one myself, but at the price of it you're really close to a Vortex 1-4x scope which is more awesomer.

A vortex or similar would be nice - but I already have an EOTech. Money is tight around Christmas - looking to do with what I have for now.

In a portion of rulesets dots and magnified scopes compete in separate divisions. Check the rules for the match you want to attend.

There's more than just tac optics.

That's the thing - right now a lot of the rules are confusing. I've perused some stuff when time allows - can't figure out the logic in some of them (red dots on ARs are OK, but red dots on shotguns puts you in open). I just need to show up at a few matches and talk - I learn by trying, failing, trying again - etc. That's why I don't sky dive.

Just bring what you have. First match or ten won't matter what division you are in anyway, and someone will hook you up if you are needing something. I could have been shooting way sooner if I heeded my own advice. After a summer of 3 gun, I'm just now getting my kit kinda of servicable. And I didn't have to spend a fortune, but did invest some as I went along. I wanted to shoot irons at first, but since 1X dot are considered irons everywhere I have shot, I went for a 1X4 optic and tac optics division. The most important thing at first is be safe, have fun, learn and figure out what you like best. I do this for fun, so that is the direction I headed. I even think it would be a hoot to shoot a Garrand in heavy metal, but probably not competitive. I would do it anyway, because my goal is recreation.

I was in the same boat. I just ordered a stag 3g and got a stoeger m3500. Look into the stoeger'p. It is pretty much a benelli and I have about $600 in it and it will run with the best.

I'm somewhat bummed that the OKCGC is no longer doing 3-gun, as it is relatively close. I guess the USSA is the place to go to try out a match. Hoping weather warms up enough for me to get out of the house and try.

What firearms do you have currently?

Inexpensive startup kit...
Stag Arms Model 3G -$1400
Burris Tac30 w/PEPR Mount - $360
Glock 34 - $650
2 Ext Base Pads - $60
Blade Tech Holster - $60
Blade tech mag pouch - $30
Benelli M2 - $1150
Nordic mag tube - $80
Welded Lifter $50

Alternatively you can start with a stock $800 rifle like a Stag Model 3. And a shotgun like a beretta 1301, FN SLP, Mossberg JM pro or even a pump action Benelli Nova or super nova.
If youre going to just list a plain ol M2, you might as well just get a $800 delton as opposed to a stag3g rifle.

I'm confused as hell too.... What does: no sight shot gun, EOTech on rifle and RMR on pistol put me? or
EOTech on shot gun, EOTech on rifle and RMR on pisol?

dot sight on pistol or shotgun moves you to open.

Would shooting 300BO affect anything? I know it's expensive as hell but when I do pick up a rifle I was dreaming of 300BO rather than 5.56 and thanks again, you guys are the breast.
