Today there was another theater shooting in TN. OK trainer and BoomerShooter, Spencer Keepers posted some good stuff on Facebook that I wanted to share. It comes from http://www.activeresponsetraining.net and the full article can be read here How to Survive A Movie Theater Shooting

Here are the bullet points if you are too lazy to read:

  1. Choose your seats wisely
  2. Pick at least two exits
  3. Carry the right equipment
  4. Think about what else you will need to escape
  5. Training is important
Active Response Training has many other good articles as well

I heard this on the radio today. I am wondering to myself why a fellow movie goer hasn't tagged one of these wackos yet?

Think about this scenario again. It’s dark and smoky. You have dozens of innocent people running around. A man is firing at you with a large caliber pistol. Could you actually hit the target with your chosen CCW gun?
TBH I'm not sure I would take that shot. I'm not sure what the calculus is for weighing the risk of hitting an innocent bystander vs the need to stop the bad guy from shooting, but for me there isn't a clear good option.

For me the to shoot or not to shoot would come down to your location in relation to the shooter. I tend to favor seats near an exit and on the isle. Theaters in my area are set up in an H pattern. The top and bottom split by an isle to go from side to side. Only one main entrance used by everyone. Other exits are opposite the entrance at the top and bottom. While the previews played in a movie I attended with my wife, I was going over different scenarios of shoot and no shoot situations. Plan ahead and don't get caught off guard.

Its finally came out that the guy had a pellet gun and a hatchet, along with some pepper spray. He flooded the area with pepper spray, but an officer came in and exchanged gunfire with him. As I understand it, a SWAT team came in and exchanged gunfire with him too. He was killed.

It just goes to show that you don't need a gun to cause major mayhem.

What ever his motives were, we probably will never know unless he left a note.
