For those of you who did not know, or forgot, yesterday (6 Aug) was the 66th anniversary of the initial use of atomic weapons on the field of battle. And Tuesday, 9 August, will be the 66th anniversary of the last time an atomic weapon was used in a war. To some, the usage of these terrible weapons is part of the true horrors of war. To most of the people reading this, those two bombs have another, deeper significances.
For it was the last time that a US President, or either party, placed the lives of American service members ahead of political policies or the opinion of those who did not and do not elect him – the world at large. The most conservative estimate of the US casualties during an invasion of the Japanese home islands was one million US servicemen, dead or maimed. And this did not take into account those that would have suffered mental traumas for the rest of their lives.
The other major significance is that it was also amongst the last times that the US press corps remembered that it was the "US" press corps.
