This article was posted to Facebook by AmericanSnipers.org and I wanted to share it with you all. I found the article to be a good and interesting read.

Are semiautomatic sniper rifles a dead-end rabbit hole from the past, or are they the way of the future? Shunned for decades by the U.S. military, semiauto sniper rifles have recently returned to the battlefield. Currently, there is great interest in designs like the ArmaLite Super SASS.

Interesting article, thanks for posting.

Bolt guns obviously can be cycled very quickly as hipower shooters do it all the time. It would be interesting to know what kind of sniper training is performed to develop quick firing such as the rapid fire strings in matches.

Uh...sitting on the couch and absent mindedly cycling the bolt is how most hi-power shooters do it. :)

It's more than just cycling the bolt. It's about cycling the bolt without distrubing your position, doing it quickly and being able to acquire your target again quickly. I've shot enough hi-power matches to be able to cycle rounds and load stripper clips as fast as is possible, it's the extra stuff that causes problems.

That was my question is how do the SNIPER TRAINING facilities train for that? Do they actually train with 10 round strings of fire on multiple targets requiring a stripper clip reload or do they focus more on one shot type stuff?

With a bolt or semi(semi will take mags from under the gun. No way to run stripper clips with a bolt gun and a scope over the top.

I read similar stories about the hostage taking in Chechnya, the sniper was prepared but not for the size group, that was involved, If I remember his comments was that they ran across an alley or a small road, in small groups,, if he had a semi he could have taken out most of them instead of only one per group.

duh... I forgot about the scope. I'm so used to talking about bolt guns in the context of match rifles and 10 round rapid fire strings that is where my head went.

So even using a bolt gun like a 700 with mod for a detachable magazine, I'd be curious to know how they train for quick multiple shots. While it's certanly easier to rapid fire a semi, it's not out of the question to use a bolt gun at all.

I would have loved to have gone to sniper school while in the Marines, but at the time they only considered infantry MOS's.
