Texas Tells Feds: Shove Your Light Bulb Ban

State lawmakers have passed a bill that allows Texans to skirt federal efforts to promote more efficient light bulbs, which ultimately pushes the swirled, compact fluorescent bulbs over the 100-watt incandescent bulbs many grew up with.

The measure, sent to Gov. Rick Perry for consideration, lets any incandescent light bulb manufactured in Texas - and sold in that state - avoid the authority of the federal government or the repeal of the 2007 energy independence act that starts phasing out some incandescent light bulbs next year.

"Let there be light," state Rep. George Lavender, R-Texarkana, wrote on Facebook after the bill passed. "It will allow the continued manufacture and sale of incandescent light bulbs in Texas, even after the federal ban goes into effect. ... It's a good day for Texas."

The Natural Resources Defense Council, a New York-based environmental group, is calling on Perry to veto the bill.

Here's something from the other side........
For the last three winters, I have cut my use of electricity 20% each year.
Jan through to April this year my bill averaged 26 bucks/month.
I changed ever bulb in my home to the curly kind. But that was my choice, I wasn't told by the gov to do it.

We have more of the curly light bulbs than the regular ones because I like daylight bulbs.
That frequency light works better with my old eyes.

BUT!
I DO NOT WANT TO BE FORCED TO CHANGE!!!!

You're right. If somebody told me I had to I wouldn't do it.

The numbers are hard to argue though.

Here's a tidbit........
The white house said there would be solar panels on the roof by the end of spring this year. Are they invisible? NO.......it's a lie. Way to set an example numbnuts.

While you can cut power consumption using the curly bulbs (and i have some), they do have their drawbacks. There is a legit concern about the chemicals contained in the bulbs that, when not properly disposed of, can leach into the soils and ground water.

Now, I would love to believe that everyone will recycle every one of these bulbs,.... but everyone knows it just isn't going to happen. So we save some coal, but what is the cost of heavy metals in the water system? I don't know, but unfortunately I doubt the Govt does either.

This reminds me a lot of the Ethanol subsidies, you do a "good thing," but you have now unbalanced the market and cause a ripple that reverberates long after the presumed effect.

I guess, in summary, I just think we should let the market decide.

And I agree schultz. SC will likely be next - I wonder which legislators son/cousin/best friend will open a light bulb factory in the upstate :roll:
