Tell me about Dissipator Uppers

Do these things use rifle length has systems? What is the purpose of the whole setup?

Most use a carbine length gas system but you can use any gas system you want, the one I have is midlenght. They are really nice if you like your grip far out and a rifle sight radius is also nice.

Same deal, longer sight radius and more real estate.

And they look really F'n cool. I am into the M4 barrel thing right now, but one of these days I would like to try a dissipator upper out.
