Thinking about buying a Judge/Public Defender for Home Defense. Any thoughts, pros or cons on this firearm, would be appreciated. Plan to load and shoot only .410 for now.
Thanks for any responses(positive or negative)!

.410 is a terrible round for humans.

.410 out of a pistol-sized barrel is extra retarded.

The gun is made for people that don't know anything about guns. Buy a real gun, for the love of G-d.

Unless, of course, you're defending your home from, say, opossums.

Old_Painless did all the leg-work for, well, me, you and everyone else on the Internet. Even without an almost infinite amount of information to dissuade a normal human from contemplating using .410 for anti-personnel matters we have a well put together demonstration of why it is a poor choice unless you just woke up from a coma during a zombie apocalypse and it is the only gun you can find.

The short answer is....

Don't do it. Just. Don't. Do. It.

In quick mention, at first it sounds like a good idea I suppose. Shotgun, great, so why not stick it in a handgun? Until you realize that .410 is miserable for SD and why most everyone uses either a 20 or 12 gauge. Add the short barrel meaning little velocity and results are predictably bad. And as noted in the link, finding loads that suck less is next to impossible.

If you want .45lc, get a .45lc pistol. Or stick with something in the big three 9mm, 40, or 45 if you want a pistol. That would be my recommendation, I find the Judge to be good for nothing more than novelty.

the 410 in a pistol is no good and the judge with a pistol rd is no good because of the mile long cylinder. if the bbl is as long as the cylinder then you have an 8 in long 4 in bbl.

never did like them. i think they are extra heavy too. i have a mod 29 44 mag with an 8 in bbl and an ultra light titanium (24 oz) 44 mag with a 4 in bbl. both S&W and way better. of course the light 44 mag is not for practise, just for trouble.

If you like the idea of a shotgun for HD, get a 12GA pump, load with bird shot. If you like the idea of a handgun for HD, get something simple and failsafe like a Glock, loaded with indoor ammo if you're worried about wall penetration. Better yet, get both.

Or if you just WANT a Judge, buy a Judge (too).

Discuss birdshot for HD here:

The judge is excellent for home defense if you are being attacked by hordes of small vermin like snakes or rats.

Otherwise, no.

Get a serious defensive sidearm like a full size Glock or S&W M&P, get a defensive carbine like an AR-15 M4gery, or follow Joe Biden's advice and "buy a shotgun" if you're cheap. Don't use a Judge.
