Talk me into going to my first match

Thanks for the invite. I'm not nervous, I just have no clue how any of it works. Really don't want to shoot myself in the leg at my first match.

Just tell people that you are new and they will put you at the bottom of the list that way you can watch other people before you shoot

Do any of you think there will be more than 30 people. I'm not the kind of person to butt in. I'm coming regardless, unless something crazy happens, But I don't want to bump someone out that is a regular shooter at these matches.

I'll be there. how many rounds do we need to bring? FMJ's OK?

Unless you have money to burn FMJ would be the preferred ammo.

Don't worry about bumping somebody, it's first come first served.

Good deal. I've never shot indoors, so I wasn't sure if I needed frangible ammo. I know some rifle ranges say no FMJ

Went to the match at Heartland last night, my first. I had thought initially I was going to just watch and learn. Not much chance of that though once you get there. I was very nervous and had no idea what to do, but David, Burk and a few others made it a great experience. Other than shooting the girl instead of the bad guy (on the target, of course), it was a great night. I will no doubt go to more.

Yeah shooting a girl is not the best way to start your first match. HA, just kidding. It was fun wasn't it. Which shooter were you?

Burk, I am the shooter in post #5.
At least you got my best stage

Thanks again for the video. I sent the link my dad in central Texas. I described each of the stages to him and he was completely jealous, especially when he found out that the cost was less than what he pays for range time there. Poor guy has to drive 45 mins to the nearest indoor range. I promised him that I would take him to a match the next time he is up here.

Gotcha!, I hope to see you again. You were a big help running the match

I've always had an interest in doing this. I read the whole thread and need a lil more info. Three gun, pistol, riflle, shotgun? What are the requirements? My AR15 is a heavy 24" bull barrel. Can I use an AR10 instead? I have a looong semi auto 12ga, can I use a smaller, lighter 20ga pump mossy? Some more info, or a link would help me out a lot. thx guys.

Remember this isn't bench shooting or even firing a few & walking down to check target hits. This is clearing a stage, shooting quite a few rounds while moving. That said the 24" bull barrel may get a little heavy by the end of the day, maybe not, depends on you. Yes you can use an AR10, you wouldn't be the only 1 shooting .308. But you may need to think about cost of ammo, consistency after that many rounds etc, again up to you.
I'm not sure what you mean by long but most of us use 22-26" barrel S/A shotguns, with a 9+ rnd capacity. A few use pumps, but pumps are a little slower than a S/A. I've not seen any 20ga but as long as it'll knock down the steel it should work. There'll be plenty of Shotguns there that folks will be more than willing to loan out.
Don't let the lack of gear stop you. After you figure out what works best for you, you can start "gearing yourself up". Then you can payback by helping the next guys. Most of us started out with borrowed gear, especially shotguns, and are more than willing to help out fellow shooters new or old. That's the beauty of this whole community. It doesn't matter who you are or where you're from, or what your skill level is, we all just want to have fun & further the sport. I've never seen anyone not help for fear of competition. Most of us bring extra gear just in case someone forgot something.
Everyone would like to win, but unless your one of the very top guys, it's really more about competing with yourself & trying to improve. I've never seen anyone get pissed because someone beat them. But I have gotten mad at myself for not doing as good as I could because I didn't follow my game plan (or because Jesse DQ'd me :D ).

Well said Wallrus! You can run anything you want gun and gear wise. Some stuff is more conducive to speed than other stuff. Here is a link to the rules we use at okcgc.

The best way to figure out your gear is to ask a lot if questions and get to a match ASAP.

Well, I know everyone says go to a match and see what people are using and see what you like before you buy anything, but I could resist. I went ahead and ordered a Bladetech holster, a CR speed belt and some mag holders. I figured this was the bare minimum. The only holsters I had were true carry holsters and would have been horrible for a match and I didn't even have any mag pouches. I only spent about $150 total, so even if it all turns out to be junk, I'm not out too much money. I figured I would need at least something to be able to even make it through a match. Now, I just need to get it in through all this friggin' snow and get familiar with it and find a match to go to.

You gonna help me out through the match, Jesse? Remember, I'm buying the beer afterward.

Depends on what kind of match you go to.

I was thinking IDPA, USPSA or 3 gun. An IWB Crossbreed or a OWB leather with snap isn't very fast. Obviously, if it was a carry match of some sort, then I would go pretty much like I carry.

I used a Crossbreed Supertuck Deluxe in this last match and it was my first. I found out the hard way that the holster is just what carries your gun up to the line. It's what happens when it's out of it's holster is what made my match difficult LOL, I had a blast though. I will be back for more. I just gotta practice on slowing down and making good shots.
