Taking Care of Public Ranges

Ya'll:

I have noticed as of late an increase of slob shooters at Boggy Head. It seems there are a lot of range slobs who are not cleaning up after themselves. Last night I saw a bunch of old targets and misc junk strewn around. As users of these facilities, we need to try to encourage fellow shooters to clean up after themselves. I have caught people shooting tracers and politely informed them that is a no-no. Once US Parks was out there watching people shoot. They got onto a few who were shooting at steel and throwing clay disks.

Please follow the very simple rules they have or these places could get closed!

Almost every time I am out there, I wish I could load up a bunch of trash from there and haul it off...
And, yes, you get tired of picking up other peoples junk off the range..

We need to do pur part. It is just another thing that people just don't give a elephant dung about. They think that someone else will pick up their trash...

Perhaps we should pick a day and get a group of guys to pick up the range.

The NFS rangers hold a clean up day on both ranges a couple times each year. I have volunteered (along with many others) to aid in these clean up efforts. The sad thing is a few weeks later the range looks almost as bad.

We can all do our part and try to pick up trash and leave with more than you brought. The tossing clays thing is really bad because of lead shot landing outside the range boundaries. I've stopped a few from tossing clays.

I have no issues with shooting steel provided it's done safely but I understand the regs however steel was permitted in the past. My pet peeve is folks shooting TV's, computers, plastic toys, stuffed animals, etc.

I'll never forget the idiot that showed up with a case of empty GLASS beer bottles and was dragging them out onto the 25 yard berm to set 'em up - I politely asked him to reconsider!

Guys: I have been thinking about some targets for Shootzenfest...

I am looking for some rebar...I want to cut 2 pieces about 4' long. Then weld some pieces on the top ends of them at about a 70 degrees angle. Then put another piece of rebar across the two....Then with this framework....use 100 lb. test string and hang plastic bottles from the strings...

Then, with some wind, you could have moving targets...but, you can replace the bottles when they get shot up...You could even put colored water in the bottles. You can make a mess...but, an easily cleaned up mess...

You would have 2 pieces of rebar to drive into the ground, and a few plastic bottles to pick up..

If you guys like the idea...let me know...and start saving your bottles...gallon milk and water jugs would be great for long range...

If I can find the rebar, I could make 3 or 4 of these. We could put them at different distances...

Let me have some ideas...

Steve I may have some rebar for the top but not enough for the legs, they would have to be wood.

Pops and I have been to several of the official cleanups.
I was thinking more in terms of one totally held by the forum.
We could at least get the big stuff in the trash area
The smaller stuff in garbage bags.
I doubt we could get the man power to clean like at the official ones where the whole place gets raked but we could at least pick up the trash.
10 guys could do a lot in an hour.

Clicker: I know what you mean about wood...but, with wood, you just can't get it firmly into the ground...

Maybe I am way wrong, but I figured you could use rebar...it is too small to hit much...

I figured if you build it 4' high and then dropped the bottler down about a foot, and keep them away from the sides by 10 to 12"...it should be OK...

I can get wood, orm I have some 2" PVC here at the house...

Come on guys lets hear some more on the idea...

That is a good idea. Plus maybe a big note on the bulletin board out there saying something to the effect "cleaned up by palmettoshootersforum.com, please help us, help you have a clean place to shoot by placing your used tragets and spent cases in the proper containers."

I wish there were some type of containers for the spent cases to be deposited in. But they too would be shot up just like the trash cans.

Steve, I have several of the metal target stand bases that can be set up as far apart as needed and the uprights could be as tall as needed. They are held upright by large spikes in the ground. We could make a target holder 6-8' wide and 8' high.

P.S. I concur with the idea of doing a forum FLASH clean-up on a regular basis.

Ive got about 20 2 liter soda bottles and will start saving milk jugs too...ill bring them filled with water and buy a big container of RED kool aid to mix in for extra fun.
