Hey guys,

I've been lurking for a while here but had a question so here I am!

I've been shooting for just a little over a year now so am mostly a beginner but I'm wanting get into some competitive shooting and am looking at buying a new pistol. I've been looking at STIs since it looks like they're pretty popular. I've been looking around for a decently priced Edge but have noticed some Tactical DS's priced a few hundred cheaper. I like the option of the rail also so am leaning towards buying one.

I guess my question is: Is there an advantage the Edge has over the Tactical DS competitively?

Thanks!

Aaron

Only issue would be if the sights need adjustment it won't necessarily be easy like with the adjustable rear of an Edge. The fixed black front sight of the Tactical isn't a handicap if you shoot in bright light. The rail is cool if you use it for a nightstand gun. Welcome to the light.

Price magazines and basepads and magazine guts from makereadyproshop.com . Add that directly to the cost of the gun. You won't get away with just the price of the gun. Holster, mags, mag pouches, nearly always come into play.

Also, some of us have gear you could borrow.

What are you shooting now?

Awesome - thanks! I'm hoping to make it out to some matches in the coming months to see what everything is about!

Right now my EDC is a 3.8 Springfield XDM and I also have a Sig 226 that I love, outside of that first DA pull...

I'm a member out at the OKCGC too, but am usually out there during weekday mornings and rarely even see anyone else.

Welcome

You need to come to match and decide what Division you want to shoot in.
Examples
Limited (EDGE)
Single Stack (1911)
Production (Your SiG 226) Double check the production list

I'd go with a tactical but id get adjustable sights installed. Having a rail is mandatory if you ever want to shoot a night match. Plus it just looks better IMHO!

If you go the route Jesse suggests check out Dawson precision. He has some of the lowest prices on STI you'll find and if you purchase the gun and adjustable sights from him you can have them installed before the gun ships. With the rights tools sights are a fairly easy install though. Also like Mitch said you need to factor in all your gear when looking at buying a new gun. When getting into 2011's by the time you add tuned mags, belt, holster, ammo and mag pouches it could easily almost double your cost. So with that being said I would be certain which discipline and division you want to shoot before you bought anything.

Good idea! Those Dawson tuned guns come with a trigger job too don't they? Stock STI trigger is OK but it's not a custom Job by any means.

Last one to consider is the Marauder. Kind of the best of both. Good sights, light rail, and if you look hard, you can find one that they made in .40 for a limited production run (I think there is one on the USPSA Gear Yard Sale FaceBook Page). They took out the silly recoil master and put in the one piece tool-less guide rod, trigger is good, and it comes with 140mm magazines. It's also already cerakoted so the finish wont wear off the first time you draw from a kydex holster.

ETA It is still out there and he is asking $1950 with one mag. Smokin deal at $1800 or $2000 with all of the mags he has..

not sure I bought a CRP Edge and I still had to have Mr Accurate Iron work the trigger over. Plus he's coming from a XD and Sig so it will feel amazing to him anyway!

Oh bummer. I might be thinking of the Brazos guns. I think he sells tuned up stock edges doesn't he?

a tuned gun from Dawson & the CRP are different.
The CRP is basically just all the bolt-ons

I talked to dawson last year and the crp was all they really offered other than a stock gun. Lady on the phone said they didn't do trigger jobs anymore.

I wonder when they quit. Mine came with the trigger job and I got to pick the weight.

Thanks for all the info guys! It'll probably be a few months down the road before I have the money for all the new gear, but I'm going to try to make a match soon even with just my sig!

Definitely make all possible local matches with anything you have. Just going to a match is a lot better than waitng to go to one.
