Hey! Great to find a SC forum. Moved to Spartanburg and almost found the need to get armed. :( we already had a lawnmower stolen an today, the BAG off the new mower (mower chained to a tree). my wife saw 2 different guys in the yard coming home from work before (while I wasn't even near) and we've seen a total of 8 stray dogs in the yard from pit bull and dobermans from labs... ugh. I have my CWP completed and should be arriving shortly. In the meantime ive looked for info on personal property carries. So, as far as I can tell, I can open carry on my real property and anyone else's that gives me permission...is this correct? Next question, any sporting shows or anything good in the upstate to go watch or do to learn? Besides that story time, 2 LEO experiences so far both at my house, both covered weapon holstered, first time I told him I was carrying like I should, he said "cool its your house"...today she said "wheres it at" i tell her, she walks over and takes it out of my holster and puts it in her car, then puts it in my car and told me to wait till she left to get it. 2 totally different responses.... any other exp with spartanburg county or city out there? (both of those were city)

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!

In addition to the guns, a home video security system might be warranted. I recall someone talking about a well priced system on the board recently. I'll try to find the thread.

First off, "Welcome" to the forum! You wrote that you moved to SparkleCity; where from? Depending on what you're accustomed to, it could be a culture shock. Not the first place I would have recommended, and your experiences with Sptbg. Dept. of Public Safety don't surprise me. Hope things get better for you.

Welcome, and sorry to hear about you're having problems with Spartanburg so soon. Of course, there is a reason it's on the news almost every night... :?

You are correct, you can open carry on your personal property and anyone else's that gives you permission. Did you move from an OC state?

The LEO experiences are, alas, both considered legal (IIRC). Some cops are more laid back then others, and respect both your rights and your status as an adult, but they can take your weapon for officer safety. What the second officer did sounds over the top ridiculous, but the next time that happens, explain that you do not consent to them seizing your fire arm and be sure politely obtain the officer's information. You could potentially avoid the situation entirely by not telling the cop where its location is. Simply reply "Somewhere safe, and it's going to stay that way."

welcome 2 the forum.i live in spartanburg 2 and from what you wrote i think you live in the same neighborhood as i do lol!

Na im from SC, Greer mostly, I Don't mind cops doing what makes them feel safe, Just wish they would put notes on my address or something that says "hey this guys cool and carries" (2012 and I doubt they do this...would make too much sense), or at least have a department wide standard on what they do. The difference was a shock for sure, I was like "uh why'd ya do that?" felt naked w/o it... not consenting to something a cop tells or asks you gets ya into one of "those situations" that you see on COPS. Either the cop or the other guy says or makes a tiny little wrong move and things go downhill, and no matter what the reason, I don't ever wanna have police not on my side. I suspose living here much longer and I'd have 'em all called out and they'll know me at some point :P installing motion sensored flood lights on all angles of the house next week hopefully will solve the little trespassing/ theft problem to begin with.
