I wasn't sure if this goes here or Gunsmithing so here goes.

My 1st venture into the world of the 1911 from the cozyness of the polymer world is a Spartan. I swapped out the stock front sight for something a little thinner, and a curved main spring housing. Pure factory other than those items.

The mags are STI factory mags with DP basepads.

The thing refuses to run on 200gr SWC or RN loaded to every COL from 1.249x" down to 1.229x" as listed in the manual. It will run them if I only load a few in the mag. If I fill the mag to capacity the rounds just nose dive into the feed ramp.

Hell it will feed an empty case if I only load a few in the mag!! So needless to say I'm bumfussled.

It runs pretty well on Monarch 230gr FMJ, but not every time.

(the rounds pictured are some mocks which is why they look so short)

This thing is driving me crazy so any good advice on what the problem is would be much appreciated.

this MAY NOT be the answer but a high shelf mag catch may help - it will allow the bullet to get closer to the chamber instead of hitting the ramp. I'm anxious to see what the real pros say.

Greg,

Try some other mags first, I'd try Tripp, CMC, and Wilson and see if your feeding problems persist. Every 1911 nosedive I've had was a mag issue. Try and run a box or two of 230gr round nose while you're doing this. I'm sure local shooters would lend you mags to try out. I think I may have a CMC for you to try.

I've got a bunch of Tripp Cobra mags you're welcome to try out.
