When you read this please bear in mind that SC only has about 4.6 million residents.

According to the story reported by WISNews.com in Columbia, the Social Security numbers weren't encrypted. Why not? We'll probably never get an honest answer.

"From the first moment we learned of this, our top priority has been to protect the taxpayers and the citizens of South Carolina"

A little late don't ya think you morons!

Oh yeah and run right over there to Russia and slam that bad guy against a wall and arrest him. How stupid.

Officials said that no public funds were accesses or put at risk.
Of course. Probably because they have all been spent.

The easiest way for a system to be hacked is gaining access to a person inside. Or maybe they contracted some yokel through the good ole boy system to set up the security. I feel much more comfortable putting my CC info in a site run by a private company that depends on their reputation to stay in business. It's not like an event of this nature will affect next year's tax revenues. They will probably use this to increase the state's budget.

"People who have called the number and made it through to an operator reported being on hold for 35 minutes and then being told by an Experian representative that the company would send each caller a letter with an activation code for one year of free credit monitoring".

Why on earth should we have to call?? They know what numbers were compromised. Why is that not automatic? If we owed money, you can bet we would not need to call...

I'll take the free credit monitoring but I'd like to see someone try to use my info to get a credit card or loan. Every time I try to get one I just get laughed at.

I just phoned the number and they are now giving out the code for SC residents on voicemail which seems somewhat better than earlier reports. Any resident can use this code, but if the state determines later that your number was not compromised then the service will be cancelled or you may continue at your own expense.

Code is "SCDOR123" on protectmyid.com/scdor

Thanks Treedodger!

Y'know, she said that their priority was to protect SC residents, so why did it take so long to make it public?

Because first they had to protect their own a**es. For instance, make arrangements with Experian. How long do you think that took? Oh, and the fact that their (our) system was hackable indicates it is probably run by some numbskulls, hence it took them awhile to even figure out THAT it had been hacked. Who knows how long this has been going on, or how many times it has happened. A good hacker will be able to get at the information undetected.

Oh, and thanks, treedodger!

Went to web site tried to use code said was invalid. I will call today for a code.

I?m kind of pissed about this "free" credit monitoring. $14.95 / month / person. 4 million+ potential customers. That?s 720,000,000 million out of the state budget for this "free" credit monitoring. When where I live we already have 2-3 tax increases to cover budget shortfalls and "voluntary? property tax increases to pay for school repairs I can?t help but wonder how the state is going to pay for this ?free? service. At this point I want to know exactly how this happened, how they are going to fix it, and why I am required to pay people to charge me money for their own frack ups?

Conspiracy Theory #1: Experian paid some offshore hackers to break into the SC database. Feel free to expand on this one.

I also thought it looked fishy that they were sending us to protectmyid.com and not experian.com; however, I did a little whois and found that site is registered to Experian.

This just got much worse. It was revealed that they also got bank account numbers. The article below stated that if you paid with check they had your routing and account number. But if you are like me, used turbo tax and got a refund, the state also had your bank numbers if you selected direct deposit. Savings and checking accounts are generally not protected funds like a credit card. If that is siphoned off, you are usually out of luck. Anyone who used a bank account number to pay or get refund should have that account closed and changed over to a new account immediately. What a pain......then you have to change all your direct deposits and auto pays over to the new account. Peace of mind outweighs the pain though.

"And Gov. Haley for the first time revealed another threat in disclosing that the DOR computers also included state residents? bank account numbers, bank routing numbers and other information on checks used to pay taxes".

Or better yet, don't give your checking account to any utilities or gubmint orgs. Pay with a credit card, then pay that off with your checking account. At least you will have one more layer of separation from the hackers and your money.

Well, pardon my french, but it seems like we're completely ****ered.

This is an excellent example of why our lives, our business, and our information should be privatized, NOT monitored by the inept *insert highly derogatory term here* working for the government. I mean, #$@!, either they are so incompetent as to let this happen, or they helped it happen. Either way, they'll foist the responsibility on someone else and let us continue to get boned.

And despite all this, there are some who are not going to see ANY issues with our administration or the way they handle things. Blind faith defending the utterly unaccountable faceless entity...
