From the NRA;

"State Representative Wendell Gilliard (D-111) has introduced House Bill 3575, a bill that seeks to ban countless semi-automatic rifles and shotguns. This ?assault weapons? ban has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee. While H. 3575 has yet to be scheduled for a hearing, it is important that you contact members of the House Judiciary Committee and urge them to oppose this attack on our Right to Keep and Bear Arms should it be brought up for consideration."

Yeah, I have already written the guy. Been about a week and I have not received the courtesy of a reply. All I asked was his opinion of how he felt this would be a viable method of reducing the 11,000+ handgun homicides this country experiences each year.

This and many other letters written....Hopefully some may make a favorable impression on our federal and state politicians.

I'm willing to bet that this won't go anywhere, but I've e-mailed a bunch of people about it just in case.

Probably a symbolic distraction that will languish in committee.

Don't take the eye off of the prizes of restaurant carry and constitutional carry!

I bet if someone sneaked a rider onto a bill that automatically, and permanently revoked the alcohol permit of a company if anyone was discovered on property with a CCW permit, that SC would almost instantly turn into a "dry state" as far as restaurants are concerned. THEN you would see the public outcry about doing away with this asinine "You can't defend your family from murder if you eat at Applebee's" nonsense.

He could be Ernie Hudsons stund double...

My take is he's another idiot doing idiot things.

Same idiot who wasted months of state funds and time to outlaw SCDC inmates from posting on Facebook.

Wouldn't it have been more prudent to put up cell phone transmission blocking equipment than bother with a law? And maybe toss in a couple of ex-lax into the brownies to make sure they flushed out the cell phones too...

Many states have tried but the FCC pre-empts and prevents. It is illegal, unfortunately. A couple years back the technology was demonstrated at Lieber Correctional in Ridgeville. Currently there are literally hundreds of cell phones confiscated by the Contraband team and an unknown number still floating around population.

I posted the link in the comment section of WCIV-TV news web site in the open carry article........Hopefully some of the readers will use it..........These local news sites are good places to post our views on gun control.

Getting off forum topic talking about cell phones in prisons, but it seems they could figure out who has cell phones by monitoring the Facebook pages...

Reading the definition of "Assault Rifle" in this bill, essentially, a GSG-522 with 110 round drum magazine is NOT an "Assault Weapon". Nor is an any other semi auto so long as it has a 20 round magazine with it. the magic number is 21. They should call this the "BLACKJACK" bill.

In part, an "Assault Weapon" is a:
"semiautomatic weapon(s) for which there is no fixed magazine with capacity of twenty-one or more rounds available." How do they determine is such a magazine is available? If it is in your possession?, in your truck? In your home or in the state? Perhaps if it exists in the dealer catalog somewhere?

"a firearm that use .22 caliber rimfire ammunition" It is interesting to note that I just read a story about a school shooter who used a .22 semi automatic target pistol with 10 rounds to kill 3 students and wound four more in about 20 seconds, and it only held 10 rounds. Imagine what the above weapon with 110 rounds could do in the wrong hands and with 20 minutes of time to wreck havoc in the school halls unopposed.

Arbitrary definitions of "Assault weapons" and feeling around in the dark randomly for the "magic number" of bullets that are safe to allow in a magazine is a waste of effort, time, and tax dollars.

Why not look at the firearms violence sources as we know them:

Inner city violence and inner city youth involved with gangs and drugs makes up the majority of gun violence. Concentrate your efforts in these areas. What? that's profiling? No, that's good police work.

Most guns used in violent crime are done using stolen or illegally purchased firearms. So make the possession of a stolen or illegal firearm undesirable by making the penalty for having one too costly. Since the point of having an illegal firearm is to likely commit a crime, make the possession of a firearm the equivalent of that crime. In many states, illegal possession of a firearm is up to one year in prison. I say make that the same as "Assault" since that is the least the weapon would be used for in a crime, and make the sentence ten years for the possession of such a weapon. Illegal sale, the same. Theft involving a firearm, the same.

Like everyone else on this board, I am getting tired of those who obey the law watching their rights being chipped away at in an effort to limit the damage a law breaker can do. NOT STOP THEM, but simply limit the damage. Its one of the reasons why i supported constitutional carry. We cannot afford to put 10 times the number of law officers on the streets, and frankly I do not want a police state where I go through a check point every time I go through a door (like I have for the past two days entering state government buildings, thank you).

Why not look at the firearms violence sources as we know them:

To answer the former, I suspect that "available" means that anyone, at anytime, has manufactured a 21+ round magazine. For example, there is a carbine conversion kit available for the 1911 and the Glock. There are also 21+ round mags or drums available for each. A prosecutor could make the argument that a Glock or 1911 is an assault weapon under this law. Likewise, there are mods that allow the Remington 700 to accept aftermarket mags. Assault weapon.

The reason why they are not looking at solving firearms violence is because they are either:
1) Stupid. Do not OVERestimate* these people's intelligence. If you have ever discussed this issue with a hard core anti-gun zealot you will rapidly realize that facts, logic, and reason are irrelevant. It is all about emotion and feeling. You can also refer to these types as "useful idiots." They get elected to office sometime. Rep Hank Johnson (D-GA) fears that the island of Guam might literally sink into the ocean if more troops are stationed there. Rep Larcenia Bullard (D-FL) thinks that "animal husbandry" is a form of bestiality (having sex with farm animals).
2) Evil. They know that the measures they push will not do jack to address violence. That doesn't matter, because their objective isn't to reduce violence. They hate you on a very personal level and want to punish you. They hate that you exist, that you feel some measure of independence as demonstrated by trying to exercise a "right" to self defense, and most of all they hate you because you think you have rights as a citizen.

They want to have thugs kick in your door, shoot your dog, terrorize your children, and haul you off to prison for a long time. Look at the sentencing provisions: first offence of this law is a felony with a ten year possible prison sentence. A second offense is a FIVE YEAR MINIMUM and up to 20 in prison. Those penalties are harsher than the penalties for molesting a child (sexual battery of a 14 year old for example) . The mandatory minimum is longer than that for manslaughter. They are harsher with criminal sexual assault two. They think you are worse than a child molester, rapist, or killer.

Do not underestimate the adversary. This bill is almost certainly going nowhere, but the people drafting them hate you.

*Edited to fix typo.

The point is he os the type of politician who just cares about publicity. He will waste time and money just to get ink. And everyone in his area knows that about him and only those too stupid to know it take him seriously.

Got a reply from Katrina Shealy about this. I wrote all my reps, not just her, and she's the only one who's responded.

"Mr. 11B3XCIB,

The Bill 3575 has no co-sponsors and has not been assigned to a sub-committee. I doubt it will make it to the floor of the House of Representatives. The best thing to do would be to watch it and if it manages to get assigned to a sub-committee in the House, then have gun-rights groups and anyone else you know get involved writing letters and emails and putting calls in to the sub-committee members and other representatives and even attend the sub-committee meetings and speak against the bill.

Thanks,
Katrina"

I think you mean "overestimate." :D
