A huge sinkhole in Guatemala City (map), Guatemala, crashed into being on Sunday, reportedly swallowing a three-story building?and echoing a similar, 2007 sinkhole in Guatemala.

The 2010 Guatemala sinkhole has likely been weeks or even years in the making?floodwaters from tropical storm Agatha caused the sinkhole to finally collapse, scientists say.

The sinkhole appears to be about 60 feet (18 meters) wide and about 30 stories deep, said James Currens, a hydrogeologist at the University of Kentucky.

Click on the link at the bottom of my first post. There are several in their area. I guess they are prone to sinkholes!

That is bizarre. It looks so symetrical there appears to have been some intelligent design behind it.
If it is 30 stories deep that accounts to about 250 to 300 feet. The length of a football field.

I was in Puerto Rico once and toured Clara Cueva, It is amazing the caves and caverns that exist under the surface of the earth.

Sad for the folks in the buildings. They probably had no clue as to what happened.

I've been there as well. PR has a lot of holes. I thought it was odd when you looked at the ground up in the mountains in the west side that all you could see were the fossils of seashells.

I took a Geology class at USC in '02, if I remember correctly sinkholes are formed as a result of under ground water leeching minerals and forming caverns.

Most are in areas with limestone based soil and florida is dotted with lakes that are a result of sinkholes. If you do a google map of the orlando area, you will see an insane number of small lakes. Flying into Orlando is pretty neat, there are a ton of lakes and baseball fields.

There is a giant sinkhole out in Amarillo Texas too. Well, it's my ex-wife but about the same effect. :twisted:

Yes, I also went fishing in Dos Boca's lakes up in the mountains and there were sea shells everywhere.
The fish, I was told, were formerly salt water varieties.
