I am looking to start in 3 gun and Pro Am shotgun at USSA. On average how many shells do you need to have on you to complete a stage? Assuming you hit most of what you are shooting at. I will be shooting a Versamax Tactical with 8+1 capacity.

I'm sure one of the experts has better info then me but I use four caddies on my belt then add if stages require more shell to complete it. Some stage will require more shell and some require less but I always carry four 4 shell caddies.

If you're just starting out, you can get 4 4 round caddies and borrow the rest from your squadmates if necessary. If I'm shooting a shotgun, the most common number of caddies I take is 4, and I'll sometimes take 3 if it's a short stage. You want as many rounds on your belt as the course requires, and what's in your gun at start is bonus ammo.

A 3-Gunning gunsmith once told me that the key to shooting the shotgun is "don't miss". That turned out to be completely accurate. If you start making up shots and you only have a handful of extra shells, you may run dry with targets left to engage.

For 3 gun I recommend 4 four round Caddys. For ProAm we shoot 30-40 rounds in one stage. Do borrow a caddy or 4 from your buddies and your set.

I would go a little higher than that, unless you are very proficient with your shotgun (under the buzzer). I would carry 3 of the 6-round caddies and have a 4th one ready. Most shotgun stages are between 10-22 for local matches so that would get you through.
