The latest installment of shoot / no shoot involves a situation that can, and has, happened since the shooting in Chattanooga. Have you ever put yourself in a situation and asked yourself the question How would I respond?

Scenario:

You are going out to eat Chinese food with your spouse (or significant other). The all-you-can-eat buffet is in a strip center next door to a Amy Recruiting Center. As you exit your car, you see a man dressed in street clothes walking down the sidewalk towards you, the Chinese restaurant and the Recruiting Center with an AR type rifle.

What is your response?

Tell my wife to get behind the truck in line with the tool box, and call the police.
What's his attitude? Does he have the rifle slung? Low ready? Does it have a magazine inserted? Is he wearing body armor? Way more questions than answers without seeing the view.
I would have to see the visual to get a feel for what else to do next.

I probably wouldn't think much of it unless he was showing some attitude. Might be a gun shop in the same strip mall and he is just walking back to his vehicle. Sure wouldn't turn my back on him though.

Its probably nothing but to be on the safe side I would move perpendicular to his direction of travel while maintaining a visual on him. I do not want to do anything that would appear to him to be aggressive.

Since I am in a parking lot, I will try to keep several vehicles between the two of us.

If he changes direction towards me and appears to be aggressive, all bets are off. I would call 911 immediately after pulling my concealed handgun. Since he has a rifle and I have only a handgun, I would try to position myself behind a vehicle that is parked out by itself. I will then be in a somewhat defensible position where he will need to come out into the open to pursue me.

And I hope this never happens.

Isn't there a show about these types of scenarios on one of the outdoor channels? It's always good to know "the best defense".

[semi-joking] After seeing those rednecks "guarding" our military personnel, I wondered what would happen if one of them walked up with his AR and another one was already there with his AR; what would happen?
Not to worry, they got it covered.

Man on station issues challenge "Hey watch this Bubba".

Correct response "Yup, that's gonna hurt".
