Wondered if folks could clarify shipping regulations for handguns. I need to ship a handgun back to the manufacturer for warranty repair.

I looked at the UPS website for their take on it and it reads anyone can ship through them "from and between persons not otherwise prohibited from shipping firearms by federal, state or local law."

Looked at the ATF website and "A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm."

So as I understand it, JUST TO BE SURE, there does not need to be an FFL involved on my side to ship a handgun??? I couldn't find anything on an FFL returning it directly to me...anyone have any experience?

Thanks!

You can ship to to a FFL or to a manufacturer. The hard part is that you have to take it down to the UPS or FedEx hub to do so.

For you to ship it out you do not need to be an FFL. You do however have to send it to an FFL which the manufacturer would be.
Getting it back from the manufacturer after repairs are made, it can be shipped directly to you, usually with a signature required.

I just sent a g22 back To Glock, the paperwork sai it had to be shipped next day and from an ffl, my ffl sent it priority with delivery confirmation!!!

Thanks fellas...We have a daily pick-up at my office with UPS, which is the other option from UPS, rather than taking it to a hub. And somebody is always there to sign for deliveries.

Good to go! Thanks again for the confirmation.

Looking at Glock's paperwork for my deal, under shipping methods it says "Firearms may be shipped from a licensed firearms dealer or via UPS or Fedex...and that's what got me all stirred up!

FFLs can ship handguns USPS but us regular folks have to use a contract carrier when shipping handguns for some reason. You can ship a handgun or long gun person to person in state with out going through an FFL but anything going out of state has to go to an FFL

I forgot about that option.

Sorry Tony but I have to disagree:

Q: May a nonlicensee ship a firearm through the U.S. Postal Service?
A nonlicensee may not transfer a firearm to a non-licensed resident of another State. A nonlicensee may mail a shotgun or rifle to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. The Postal Service recommends that long guns be sent by registered mail and that no marking of any kind which would indicate the nature of the contents be placed on the outside of any parcel containing firearms. Handguns are not mailable. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun.

If you have you choice go with FedEx they were much easier to deal with than UPS! took 3 trips to UPS and then had to print off the explainations that it was ok for them to ship, real pain! just my two cents worth. Later,

Kirk
