Funny little incident today...

My husband, son and I drove up to Canton today to look at some vehicles, and we took advantage of the ability to OC, naturally. We met the seller at a rest stop, and he seemed perfectly comfortable with us being armed. He even talked to my husband about buying guns and getting his concealed weapons permit, in light of what happened in Aurora.

Anyways, our son was tired of being in the car seat, so I took him into the rest stop to look around and cool off while my husband test drove the car. Multiple people walked past us in those 20 minutes, and even though a few noticed, not a one freaked out or even commented to their companions about my shiny, holstered Kimber.

Until...

I carried my one year old son back outside to our car to get him a snack, and a man in his 20's-30's was standing at the top of the stairs, talking on his phone. As I walked towards him, I heard him saying "Now you listen, son, 'cause, I got some choice words for you, son..." then he noticed us approaching. He said "I'm not gonna say those words right now because there is a lady and her baby walking past me, but once she's out of ear shot, I'm gonna let you have it!"

I passed by with my weak side to him and walked down the stairs, and suddenly heard him exclaim, "Holy ****! She's got a gat! The lady with the baby has a gun on her side! She's strapped!!! I ain't gonna mess with her...I wouldn't hurt her anyways, but I definitely ain't gonna mess with her while she's got a gun!..."

I smiled the whole time I heard him freaking out, until I was out of earshot, and then I couldn't stop chuckling. The grandma, the 14 y/o highschool girls, the soccer mom with her three kids; not a one of them reacted at all to my gun (even though most of them noticed!) but this tough looking dude with a wife beater, backwards ball cap and lots of tattoos was totally shocked. I wonder how he would have reacted if he'd known I was actually carrying 2 guns

My impression was that if he was going to bother me in any fashion, it would have been for money or for a hitch hike. He was a white guy trying to sell the 'tough, street life' image. I got the hitch hiking impression from the back pack/duffel bag rig he had leaning against the wall, plus being that we were at a rest stop just off of the interstate.

When he said "son", I think he was using the term to talk down to whomever was on the other side of the phone, but it could very well be that he was faking the conversation entirely in the hopes of catching me off guard. I'm glad my gun acted as a deterrent, whether he planned on bothering me or not.

I don't know where the 'gat' came from; probably trying to use 'hip' terminology, or something. I'm in my mid-twenties, and when I relayed the incident to my husband, I had to ask him what 'gat' had to do with 'gun'. I just don't get the connection. :? Guess I'm not hip, lol.

Straight from the Urban Dictionary...

"GAT:

Old slang, meanging gun. Came from shortening Gattling gun to just gat. Was used during the prohibition era to name any gun, but specifically the thompson submachine gun, aka The Tommy Gun."

I'd really, really, REALLY love to see Caitlin OC'ing a Gatling gun.

Haha, I think it would be OC'ing me

If I did mount one to the stroller, I'd have to have another one on the opposite side to balance out the weight...hmmm...
